We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Absent legitimacy it's a sprint to whatever irreducible power center presents itself. As in any other no-rules fight, the violent prevail over the peaceful and the homicidal prevail over the violent. This isn't mere looting, major assets, even national assets, are in play. Mexico for example, one of the most violent countries on earth, is conquering—not merging with, conquering—the southwestern US. National borders are always under control, the only question is by whom, and events are answering that question. We forfeited this essential element of sovereignty by getting wrapped around our own prissy little axle while Mexico and its domestic enablers adapted.
The middle class is the designated prey in all this.
...this time around has been the bleating of moral illiteracy from most of Europe. No European country would countenance a neighboring territory being used as a launch pad to murder its citizens, and every single one of them would make haste to silence the source of fire, whatever it reasonably took. And yet every time Israel does the same, the post-bellicist crowd bows down to the altar of proportionality, accusing Israel of dissing that sacred principle. But would the Eurosheeple really like it any better if Israel responded to Hamas attacks with exact proportionality, by, say, deliberately targeting Palestinian kindergartens and school busses?
I have long believed that in states where agriculture is a strong economic sector, that those state run universities should offer students the opportunity to do agricultural labor in exchange for tuition credit. It would have to be a very fair exchange say something like 12-15.00/hour. But, then again. . .that would mean hard physical labor which most our young people are not prepared to do to earn their education.
It sounds pretty good till he talks about a "a neutral third party would keep tabs on each provider and its success rate". Who is this neutral third party? In Washington?
Though my preference is not to have welfare of any kind (personal or corporate), it's not feasible to just turn it off. What I would do is graduate welfare payments so that the recipient could work and earn a little more money. As his income grew, the payments would be reduced. Also all welfare payments would be time limited - regardless of whether the recipient was working or not.
Still, Ryan's sounds better than what what we have now, but that's a low bar.
If I remember correctly, the last time that happened, they said, "You German's stop shooting at us and come steal all our stuff, run our government and generally make yourself at home." At least, Continental Europe.
Sorry, universities won't even much out their own departments and it's getting deep in those stalls. Faculty and students alike, just tilt their head's up, look down their noses and figure it is all those "non-college" types who are stinking the place up.
Yeah, we used to have religion that taught us how to accept our smallness in the world. That for all our tools and thoughts, one slight change could kill us all.
I once was knocked off the road in my car by a cat. A lesson in the decrease in friction when your tires slide and the introduction of a lateral force when the cat's head hit the cowling on my front bumper. Me, the big, powerful human, I was just along for the ride.
"...Of course, no amount of breathless tweeting or book sales means that any woman actually wants to be involved with a violent, dangerous man in real life ..."
But that is the fantasy. And they fantasize about someone like Christian Grey. When in reality, as Jeff Foxworthy says, if the'll end up on an episode of cops hanging out the door of a trailer in a tube top, yelling, "Lock him up. Lock his a** up"
"The middle class is the designated prey in all this."
True. You pay thousands of your tax dollars each month for each illegal immigrant and for each refugee. It doesn't matter if you can afford it. It doesn;t matter that it is destroying the country and the middle class. Special interests want this and you must pay for it. The country is bankrupt and we are essentialy argueing over who gets what's left.
