We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Pic above: A reader sent in that pic of a Patisserie window in Paris. The batch on the right are macarons. Not macaroons, macarons.

I suggest we not tolerate Swarthmore students....
"Why not ban fireplaces too?"
Weren't you aware? That's next on the agenda:
Re: NBC Depicts Married 23-Year-Old Olympian as Living an ‘Alternative Lifestyle’
I'm not sure that NBC isn't poking fun at the other competitors who apparently are not mature.
The EPA has for it's entire history been the handmaiden of the radical environmental movement. They specifically create regulations friendly to a law suit by radical environmentalist who then win in court and receive large monetary settlements that they use to support politicians who in turn write more laws favorable to the radical environmentalists. The EPA is a criminal organization claiming to be a scientific organization.
As much as it pains me to be fair to our GE/NBC masters, in the amazing world of extreme sports, maturity and "conventional morality" is almost certainly an alternative lifestyle.
Another red line!?
"Obama condemned the violence in Ukraine, saying that the U.S. holds the government "primarily responsible for ensuring they are handling protesters peacefully" and that "there will be consequences if people step over the line."
NBC poking fun? Gimme a break! That whole crew takes themselves WA-A-AY too seriously and expects their viewers to follow them off the cliff.
From the Swarthmore link:
“What really bothered me is, the whole idea is that at a liberal arts college, we need to be hearing a diversity of opinion. I don’t think we should be tolerating conservative views because that dominant culture embeds these deep inequalities in our society.
As if an elite college that rejects 85% of its already highly qualified applicants is all about equality. [Swarthmore could probably select its students by lottery and come up with a similar SAT profile. Dummies do not apply to Swarthmore.]
We should not be conceding to the dominant culture by saying that the so-called “progressive left” is marginalizing the conservative,” Erin Ching ‘16 said.
When the MSM is overwhelmingly liberal, when the culture at institutions of learning from Pre-K to graduate is overwhelmingly liberal, somehow the wingnuts are perceived as "dominant." From the prog viewpoint, the world is apparently not safe until wingnuts are wiped from the face of the earth.
The patisserie picture reminds me painfully of the difference between European baked goods and the vile crap we eat over here.
How come we can do so much so well but are prepared to tolerate cupcakes with over-sugared faux buttercream icing? God, not only tolerate them but be so ignorant as to call them gourmet food.
I know that in the big cities, NY, LA et al there are a small number of world class bakeries. Even so, in Europe nearly every bakery is good, and here, nearly every bakery is bad.
Starbucks baked goods are to die from.
"Oh, No! Not Another Black Conservative Republican Running for Office" Oh my, another great black hope for the GOP!
Not only that, she is a female, black, conservative running for office. Not only that, she is a successful, single mother, female, black, conservative, tea party, republican running for office. Did I miss anything? Golly, I hope not. It's important to apply all of the correct labels. Labels are what count. Labels get you properly slotted into your specific demographic(s). The correct demographic is important because the government has a specific program for each of them. Thus, the more, the better. It's better because each one will gain cumulative government privileges and protections. It's also better if you are running for office because you will automatically gain the support of everyone else in the same demographic(s). If I were advising this young up and comer, I would encourage her to remember being molested by someone when she was a child. A priest maybe or better yet, an abortion doctor. Being a person of "faith", despite her ordeals, won't hurt. Plus, having a retarded and/or veteran and/or adopted family member is required. Being impoverished a little bit and once missing a meal or two would be nice if the other guys can't prove you are lying about it. Having trouble filling out the school admission and loan approval forms, because they are racist, would not hurt. Just because she is black doesn't mean she shouldn't play the race card. I could go on. And on.
Does anyone else see the problem here? This culture of ours is fragmented. It is fragmented into a million little pieces. It isn't good enough to be an adult person. It isn't good enough to be an American citizen. We need to be a person of color or -- insert label here. In that mad scramble to provide "equality", we adopted policies and administer programs that splintered the people of this country into many separate, unequal and competing groups. Just what any successful tyranny requires.
I was disturbed that the article made unsupported assumptions by referring to Erin as a "she" without further information about his/her actual gender identification. More evidence of the oppression caused by the dominant conservative culture.
Your point is taken, jma. I expect that there are SOME grownups at NBC but I agree the evidence is spotty.
A 12 year old DTF? Why not, the best and brightest seem to believe withholding adult responsibilities from children is a bad thing. But sadly, as a review of history shows, childhood is a modern invention.
