We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

The case for raising minimum wages

I quit reading the New Yorker article on the minimum wage when I got to the phrase "Tea Party rabble rousing."
RE: Climate change and Christmas - Its beginning here too - protesting the road-side tree vendors.
There are times I swear they've cut the normal lithium supplements in the 'squirrels' food, and it (further) drives them bonkers.
Add to that, Mikie Mann's Tirade up on HuffPo earlier, and the alarmists (Henny-Penny-ites I call 'em) are further coming unglued...
Here is a $15 fast food worker
The Pope and the Catholic hierarchy are flat stupid about economics, which is one of the reasons I left the Church.
The New Yorker author found one study which implied differing minimum wages in nearby counties would not alter hiring practices at restaurants.
But what about factories, or retail outlets, or small mom-and-pop shops?
More importantly, the author notes the wage would cause unemployment at some 'theoretical level' - which really means it will increase unemployment and not just theoretically, but let's call it that to sound like we know what we're talking about.
These 'theoretically unemployed' are being paid for by someone. Most likely, some of it by those who now have increased wages, since a portion of all incomes gets paid into unemployment.
Meanwhile, if they could have had 3 people working, instead of 1 and 2 not working, the pressure on the public dole would be somewhat less and the power and pride which any work provides would still be instilled in those who now are simply pulling a government check at well below poverty levels.
The logic of the minimum wage is absurd, but authors like this guy keep trotting out the illogic as compassion, ignoring those who are injured in the process.
The minimum wage is racist. Which is ironic on some level, I suppose given who keep pushing to raise it.
Don't believe me, go read/watch something of Thomas Sowell's. He relates that it was his interest in doing empirical research into the effects of the minimum wage and finding no interest in his then employers at the Department of Labor was a big factor in moving him from Marxism to his current views.
But the minimum wage is not just racist. It is also set up as a barrier to individualism and to enforce the ever more schooling trend. One can hardly learn on the job if you can't get that first job. And that means your only means to rise to the level of being worth the higher pay is by schooling. That's why you need a master's degree to make expresso these days. If you must stay in the edumedication system longer, there is a better chance you'll think the right thoughts just out of weariness.
Trickle down economics is simply describing reality it isn't a "policy" that can be changed to suit someones economic or political beliefs any more then you could change the laws of gravity which unfairly discriminates against the obese. Economic equality or social justice or whatever the neo-communists are calling it does not work. How is it we haven't figured that out yet after all the great failings of Socialism/communism/Fascism in history. If you want to help the poor remove the incentives to remain poor but don't put more incentives in place to encourage people to do nothing productive. That is the disconnect between logic and the left. At best you could say the left truely wants to help the poor and believe that you can if you just take enough from the productive and give it to the poor. At worst you have to suspect their motive is to eliminate the middle class and create an angry lower class that can be easily lead to do what their benefactors want them to do.
One thing that might derail the minimum wage raisers will be the reduction on in the amount of the dole (food stamps, rent subsidies, medicaid) received. But lets see.
Is it junk science or the deep pockets deciding to settle cases instead of the die roll a jury trial (and its bad press) will bring?
Sipp, will gather those posts into a book I hope. They are entertaining.
Wonder if the student editor in Macgill got lucky after his body blow to the patriarchy?
A military friend emailed my today with a long and disturbing list of the US Military General officers fired or forced to retire by the Obama administration. It amounts to a purge.
Question is, Why?
My friend and his friends are starting to freak out.
If people aren't getting paid enough, why doesn't someone - you know, one of those who think they aren't getting paid enough - start a business where they pay those people a 'living wage'?
Leftists are basically destructive. They do not create anything that conforms to their ideas and ideals, they force everybody else to accept them which is destructive of what already existed.
After they start a fast food franchise that pays a living wage, then they can start a bank that doesn't engage in 'predatory lending', and still have time to create Queer Scouts.
Kinda hard to effect 'Hope' without some 'Change'.
Things go a whole lot better when you have 'yes men' at your back, instead of resistance.
