We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Re: Tell a Noble LiePLease, please, please--someone out there please bring forward the story of the Navy Yard shooter's family life! His mother was very articulate and now we learn that this guy spoke Thai as his second language--what is the media covering up this time? There has been an absolute blanket put over the story of his family background--why?
Re: Medicare, is the cure for America's ailing healthcare.
Bernie Sanders (the Socialist congressman writing in the Guardian, the Socialist news) says; In terms of life expectancy, infant mortality and other health outcomes, the United States lags behind almost every other advanced country.
This is untrue and anyone aware enough to write an article on this subject would know it is untrue. All health outcomes in the U.S. are better then the outcomes in all of the other advanced countries. Cancer, heart disease, stroke, etc. are all treated more effectively by our health care system then by the socialized health care in England, Canada and France. As for infant mortality it is well known that because the data is collected differently our stats on this looks worse then say France or England when in fact it is about the same. But most of our infant mortality comes in the black and Hispanic community from mothers on dangerous drugs like crack and meth and NOT from a broken health care system. If those unfortunate infant deaths were excluded from the stats and only the non-drug using population was counted our infant mortality rates would be substantially better then all of the advanced countries of the world. As for life expectancy there is a similar problem; first the data is collected differently. Secondly our drug problem and the genetic diseases that blacks and Hispanics carry reduce the statistical average life expectancy. Third, and related to illegal drugs, too many young people are killed in the constant gang wars over drugs and drug money. Statistically killing an 18 year old hurts the average far worse then a 60 year old black man dying from high blood pressure or diabetes does. When you look at the U.S. life expectancy of people of European origin and compare that with the life expectancy in European countries the U.S. comes out better then any of them.
What Bernie is doing is knowingly comparing apples to oranges to achieve his lifelong goal of making the U.S. a Socialist country. Presumably Bernie and his fellow congressmen will choose to exempt themselves from socialized health care when it is implemented. Oops! That's right, they already have.
I found this and thought of you--I think you will enjoy this read. I hesitated to put it here in the fear that it might set you back a step. You are doing so well. But the fact is that the next few years will be filled with moments of reflection--the pain does become dull but the memories do not.
It's not a government shutdown. It's a curtailment of totally superfluous services. Not a shutdown of all superfluous services, just the totally superfluous ones. Time to start calling things as they are.
Well, its always been known, Socialism is only for the people, not the Socialist.
The biggest travesty was allowing Congress and their staffers a pass, which was (almost) quietly passed through. Even the Biggie Unions have turned face, and decrying what this is doing to their rank\file and they are raising their voices. Funny, I seem to remember they were one of the ardent supporters of this, at one time.
I'm to the stage of the game to 'let it burn - we'll sweep up when the fire is out' - the current Rome cannot stand under the current Nero (and his Merry accompanying orchestra that acts like a Legislative body) and the increasingly painful tune he fiddles.
I'm with you but prefer to go one step further. Let's agree to call this situation a "super sequester" and moreover let's make it permanent in order to get the federal government back on the road to fiscal sanity. Congressional Republicans should now make a non-negotiable demand for a balanced budget in 2014 and every year thereafter. Eliminating future budget deficits would make raising the nation's debt ceiling limit moot and thereby restore the world's confidence in our country's ability to live within its means. Democrats must be weened off the annual budget deficits to which they have become addicted like common crack drug users.
The language and the positions of both sides, Democrat and Republican, appear to have hardened over the last 24 hours, which means we could be in for an extended shutdown of the federal government. One good outcome of a long stalemate is that perhaps we'll begin to see how much of what the federal government does we can afford to do without permanently. Certainly if the shutdown lasts more than 2 weeks, there's no reason for the House to consider any legislation to raise the debt ceiling. If the President stubbornly refuses to negotiate with the Republican leadership just so he can look macho after being schooled by Putin on Syria, his request to increase the debt ceiling ought to be DOA at the Capitol. So be it. Words, especially the nasty ones used by this President to insult his political opponents, have consequences.
I think the word the “Let It Burn” advocates are seeking is “containment” (or more accurately, “capitulation.”) Containment worked to end the last, great socialist experiment in the USSR: it took 75 years, multiple wars, and tens of millions lives. I wonder how well it will work here?
The “Let It Burn” strategy will fail (as will Goldman-Spengler’s strategy of “let Obama assume dictatorial powers") because the American people are getting exactly that for which they voted and for which they have voted repeatedly.
Dictatorship is the most human form of government, founded on our basest natures. It endures because it feels and is natural. Only by reason and wisdom can we create and maintain any better form of government, and the people and their leaders have rejected both.
