We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Sadly, community organizing is just another way of saying political extortion. The lust for power is at the root of all these efforts. And once power is achieved it is almost always abused. The "Chicago way" really is not the way to run a country.
Great book on this topic: Radical-in-Chief by Stanley Kurtz. It outlines community organizing - front groups for stealth Socialists - and so much more. It also shows Obama's links to ACORN, SEIU, community organizing, and the Chicago Way. Excellent source on this topic.
Yeah, as far as I can tell, the teachers are pretty much living upper-middle class lifestyles in a lot of ways, and I think it's still pretty true that property taxes, not income taxes, pay the bulk of their income and benefits.
That means, as your tax base, you've got lots of skilled and unskilled blue color guys and girls without pensions or vacations or much else propping up lifestyles that are nicer than their own. It's a bitter pill to swallow when you're wearing clothes from Goodwill and driving a used car to be told you're being greedy by not doling more out for a teacher's pension. You'll never get to retire, and these guys are drawing Hitler mustaches on your governor because they may not get to retire to Europe or wherever by 55.
The man is a socialist in it's purest form. Not in the ideal sense, where everyone is equal, but in the way it was practiced in the Soviet Union and pretty much everywhere else around the world. A few "elected" people "represent" everyone and hold power over everyone's lives down to the tiniest details. The only way to make this work in practice is to get your power structure in place and then use brutal oppression to keep it there. It's no accident that the labor movement in this country began with proud, card carrying members of the communist movement. But just as the citizenry of the old Soviet Union found out too late what socialsim really meant, most of the rank and file union members in this country either don't know or don't care about what happens once their dream is realized.
