We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
...the move to get more college degrees creates a huge problem. The number going to college exceeds the number capable of mastering higher levels of intellectual inquiry. This leads colleges to alter their mission, watering down the intellectual content of what they do. Rather than studying advanced mathematics, physics or --as I did-- 18th century French literature in the native language, more students are studying business administration, communication skills, and doing vocational-school type work on the intricacies of health care provision or administration. Instead of five or 10 percent of students getting "A" grades, we give 40 percent or more. We have created a Potemkin Village -a few truly good universities that come close to meeting the former academic standards, but a vaster melange of institutions that are often neither "higher" nor even "education" in the classical sense, particularly since the typical student spends less than 30 hours a week on academics. Bottom line: too many people go to college.
This is a chicken and egg kind of thing. Most colleges today have degrees in things that have no commercial or social value but I think the driving force was not just that incompetent people were showing up at the doorsteps of colleges. First special interest groups forced colleges to offer these inane degrees then students who couldn't pass an advanced college class in the hard sciences flocked to them. Why do colleges offer degrees in Black Studies or Hispanic studies, etc.? Certainly not because they belong in institutions of higher learning.
I object to including business administration in the throw-away class. Although I started my career as I an engineer, as I moved into management, there was an enormous amount to learn about business finance, accounting practices, etc. This is not a "junk" education, especially since our insane government makes it harder and more complicated every month.
Hmm... I am far more likely to hire those who took practical stuff - Business Administration or Industrial Engineering.
Firms used to hire Liberal Arts grads because they had well-rounded flexible logical minds, excellent communication skills, along with the ability to process information and learn quickly.
Now “Liberal Arts” has become meaningless. No longer are they studying French or Greek in the native languages - or in English. Sociology, history, and the gender and race studies mentioned above have become worthless. There is no exercise in logic or critical thinking - just repeat the professors' opinions back at them and receive an A.
The universities have debased their product. I would hire a Rutgers engineer long before considering a Harvard or Princeton English major. I know the engineer has some skills and is willing to work.
In the spirit of "Anyone with any sense had already left town" I am beginning to see the brightest of the bright head off to go fishing in Alaska, or starting house painting companies, or busking their way around the world rather than mix with all the dumbeddowns at $40K per...
I think to get the kind of education we used to get, the student has to enroll in an Honors college at the Big State U. That seems to make up some of the difference in my opinion as a mom with a student currently applying to college.
Here, you can focus on private, for-profit insitutions. A recent investigation (NYT Magazine) showed a huge leap in military vets recruited into Phoenix Univ and other private for-profits. Most don't get past two classes, but that is all the for-profits need in order to collect the government tuition. This is theft from taxpayers and deceit of vets.
Make this public.
By the way,the article reports that the Washington Post, the article reported is now making more money off its for-profit insitution than from the newspaper.
Yet, when the Administration tried to cut back on the leap in monies going to the for-profits, they strike back with full-page ads and lobbyists. In one of these ads, a graduate proclaimed that his "education" taught him how to drive a big-rig, so he now has a job. Why should taxpayers pay tens of thousands of dollars a year to teach someone to drive a big rig? If he can't take the course at a community college (the fees are much lower), why shouldnt' the big rig companies pay for training?
I'm seeing push back from potential students. The next few years are going to be rough for many colleges. Some schools, and more particularly, many programs within schools will not survive the coming enrollment decline. The "kids" are learning about the evils of borrowing money for worthless educations.
I think the start of the decline will be masked by stories in the media about the increase in application numbers at prestigious institutions. More will try to go to those schools, but once their application is denied, they will go to work instead of borrowing money to attend Directional U for a communications/studies degree.
A Harvard degree is good for one thing: networking – which does open doors. If you know the secret handshake, you get a leg up.
But ever since Harvard dispensed with letter grades in favor of Pass/Fail, worthwhile education in anything but the most rigorous of the hard sciences is completely bogus. Harvard is a has-been.
Barry Obama would have had to join the Young Republicans, and admit to the fact that CO2 is a harmless and beneficial trace gas, in order to have any possibility of failing to graduate. But he cruised through his four years and received a diploma, based on no notable accomplishments.
Try to find out anything exceptional that Obama accomplished on his own merit. He now has a law firm on retainer that threatens to sue anyone who wants to dig into his past claims of adequacy. If he had actually been an outstanding high school or college student, that fact would have been trumpeted 24/7/365. Wouldn't it?
There are still good colleges, but there are many more, like Harvard, that are simply degree mills; almost no one fails to graduate [in non-hard science courses] who simply goes through the motions, and regurgitates its Leftist nonsense.
And since preferential treatment is given to favored groups like women and minorities [Asians don't count, since their overwhelming academic excellence upsets the minority apple cart], the Ivy League schools are deliberately accepting under-acheivers, rather than the best of those who truly excelled in high school. How is that good??
America was built and became great based on merit. Like so much in our new Fabian society, the move toward equality of results is leading to a mediocre, failing America – which is expected to atone for its past excellence by handing over increased tax receipts from working citizens to corrupt countries and international organizations, simply because we have earned it, and they haven't.
The recent UN/IPCC payment proposal of $100 Billion PER YEAR is being seriously discussed by UN kleptocrats, as a starting point for American atonement for emitting CO2 – something we all exhale. What American in thier right mind would agree to that extortion? But, there it is, and Obama seems eager to comply.
The Left desperately wants America brought down. They demand it. But most Americans want American exceptionalism to triumph, because it has made life so much better for the common man.
That is why I despise Obama, and everything he stands for. He WANTS America to fail. And his Cloward-Piven strategy of economic destruction seems to be working: "education" demands ever more money – with zero academic results. We are truly on the road to ruin.
