We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
The meaning of Prof. Lewis' resignation from the APS, at Pajamas:
Professor Lewis’s action — resignation from a scientific organization that had counted him among its most respected members, based on the perception that they no longer support “good science” over political expediency — is earth-shaking, even if so far in only a small way. But earthquakes are funny — a few small earthquakes can weaken an edifice, through repeated cracks, as thoroughly as one big earthquake.
Professor Lewis’s resignation is another sign that the foundation of certainty about anthropogenic, carbon-dioxide forced, global warming is showing cracks that suggest the weakness of the whole structure.
This really is a significant development, and I hope this crack leads to many others, but the overall situation reminds me of what seemed to me to be the leftist takeover of higher education during the '60s. It seemed sort of stealth (most people don't think much about the turmoil under the covers and figure they know what they're doing) and now they are pretty much a monolith. It seems that science has gone that way too and it will likely take MANY cracks such as this one before it makes a perceptible change in the direction of things.
No "earthquake" regarding this subject is big enough, but I'll take it (what choice do I have? :-) )
mudbug ... I fear that too many millions of dollars are now invested in the global warmening scam to make it easy to reverse its direction. As Professor Lewis points out in his resignation letter, no "real science" is ever settled, no matter how much Al Gore and his merry minions would like it to be. Cons like this one are too profitable for too many people to be easily brought down. Only when enough sensible folks refuse to buy into it will it finally wither away.
