We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
ARE CARBS WORSE FOR US THAN FAT? If so, can we sue the nannies who have been trying to force us to eat less fat? If nannyists and “public health” crusaders were held to the same standards as, say, drug companies, they’d all be in jail now.
Economic enlightenment is not correlated with going to college, at least among the 4835 Americans who completed a Zogby International online survey. Economic enlightenment is highest among those self-identifying “conservative” and “libertarian,” and descends through “moderate,” “liberal,” and “progressive.” Other variables include party affiliation, religious participation, union membership, NASCAR fandom, and Wal-Mart patronage. Zogby researcher Zeljka Buturovic and Daniel Klein report.
No one knows what causes cancer. The causal mechanism and etiology are unknown. Anybody that tells you this or that causes cancer or this or that will prevent or cure cancer is BSing you.
Here are the facts. In 1971 President Nixon signed the national cancer act and the National Cancer Institute was tasked to find the cause of cancer. They confidently predicted they would find the cause within 5 years, by 1976. Well, have you ever seen the NCI announce they have discovered the cause of cancer? The answer is no. The last time I checked they were confidently predicting they would discover the cause of cancer by 2015. Look at this NCI website, the next to last paragraph http://training.seer.cancer.gov/disease/war/ .
Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four (his preferred form) and Animal Farm were supposed to warnings, not suggestions.
Are carbohydrates worse or fats? No. Humans thrive on a diet with carbs, fats and proteins. Eating too much and exercising too little probably reduces some people's health status. A few people are seriously sensitive to specific elements in their diets and have to control what they eat more than others do. Eating a moderate diet that you enjoy, and getting vigorous in a manner you enjoy, will optimize your health. And then you'll die of something or other. That's biology and theology both.
I think I've mentioned this T-shirt message before, but as the Senior Maggiesfarm babe, I know it's true. "Eat well, Exercise, Die Anyway". Just know that we'll miss you. And when it happens to me, I'll miss you guys. I'm sure of it.
"Are carbs worse for us than fat?" Depends on what you need. They certainly can cheer you up when you're down. The other night my husband and I were feeling slightly depressed, and not really hungry. So for dinner I made buttermilk pancakes and we ate them with melted butter and maple syrup. They were ambrosia, I tell you, ambrosia... pure sexy sin! And we felt better and more cheerful afterwards. Best of all, we're neither of us fat, we're in our eighties and probably won't last much longer anyway, and carbs taste better than Prozac, and are cheaper too.
