We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
HALF SIGMA: Itís cheaper to own a car than to use mass transit. Conclusion: ďA walkable neighborhood, or an entirely walkable city like Manhattan, is a luxury good for rich people (a luxury good that I personally have been willing to pay for) and not an affordable alternative for regular middle class people, and especially not for regular middle class people with children.Ē
Five reasons political correctness must die. Moonbattery. We're doing our best to defeat it here at Maggie's.
Iím seeing nascent signs of a new (but actually old) fallacy, namely that since health care costs can (will?) crush the budget, we donít have to worry so much about other expenditures. The mental story runs something like this: ďif we donít cure health care cost inflation, it doesnít matter; if we do cure health care cost inflation, we can afford it.Ē Thatís exactly the kind of false mental framing that behavioral economics identifies as irrational in other settings.
From: Secular-Socialism Societies Suck out Your Soul. A review by Julie Ponzi of Dennis Praeger's article:
" If there is no God to discover (or to defy) then where does one find the creative impulse within himself necessary to mount the effort for great things? Why bother to do anything other than simply exist . . . and, indeed, why bother with that except that it would require too much effort to cease existing?"
Stunning. Just stunning. How do people think like this? I can't say enough so will just ask the first obvious thing that came into my mind before the flood of other obvious things. What did man do before he realized he had a God to discover? And what was it that created that realization? Creative impulse? Whatever. Good for man-before-God to strive with the existence thing or else we'd never have discovered God.
Oooh, you're gonna get it (in a cart/horse kind of way)...Didn't read that link but that excerpt bugs me differently. People are only inspired to do great things for the purpose of discovering or defying God? "Why bother to do anything"? Maybe to eat? Maybe to woo women? Maybe to rule men? Maybe because it feels good? Maybe to stop stuff from feeling bad? Maybe because they really hate Larry Ellison? (oops, God again...techie/geek joke)
OK, just read the link and found it further annoying. "What developments in literature, art, medicine, technology are emerging from Europe?" No fan of Europe, but I'll name a big one...Linus Torvalds, but maybe that's just me being a geek again. Or maybe it's the writer not being a techie or a biologist or any number of real professions. Such a grand sweeping statement to make, it will only appeal to those who already see things that way and turn off anyone who's the least bit skeptical.
"...annoying..."? I went past 'annoying' so fast into drooling onto my keyboard that I had to morph into early-woman-without-a-creative-impulse lump of throbbing flesh just to finish the drivel. That might have been the first article that scared me. That is, in the sense that there are human beings out there who think like that. I can say, "Oh, how stupid." all day long and not feel fear, but that one chilled me to the quick. It didn't have shit to do with socialism: Stick any 'ism' in its place and the author was still yanking the humanist chain.
Had I felt inclined, I would have mentioned CERN and the possibility of finding the God particle....... D'oh. As one simple example, you know. Morons.
Yeah, if you read some of the comments/responses on that thread (which I did later after posting the above) at least one mentioned CERN and several other similar points. When Republicans lose again, they can thank that sort of thinking.
ANy chance of some guy next door pics. Women like eye candy too. Not the crap kind you guys like to post to try to take the piss. Seriously though, ignoring the slight paedo association with your current selection (jeez guys) maybe we could have some fine young men up here or is this an exclusively male site?
alison ... I guess gorgeous guys don't have the same impact on guys as they do on women. Pity, that. There are some great pictures somewhere on the 'Net of SEALs doing their thing ... running on the beach in those sexy little shorts, etc. I just don't know how to call up these pictures or I'd tell you. Have pity, News Junkie and Bird Dog, on the distaff side of your commenters. Give us some 'guy totty' as you gave us some 'elephant totty' a day or two ago.
Yay for Marianne! Yeah that elephant totty was unfair. Navy SEALs or Brit military men - ANY of that will do nicely. Rugged male torso. You can call up some cool images from the MOD Image Database. I expect they won't do that b/c they feel it makes them look a tad gay? Can't be any worse than a pic of a girlchild in a polka dot bikini making out she's 14 with eyes for her daddy for heaven's sake!
