We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Saw Barzun's Dawn to Decadence on your reading list have intermittently read portions of it (It's BIG!). The best so far was the section on "Eutopia". It's probably been said elsewhere, but it was one of those "YES!" moments for me.
Dr. Bliss ... Surely surely this is an artist's rendition of a book collection [they never read very much anyway]. I'm sure you must treat your books more respectfully, even if they're "non-serious" as D says.
Oh, I mean the "non-serious" book question, well, seriously. It's one thing to hear our pundits recommend professional or intellectual books; I was more interested in what Dr. Bliss might read just for leisure.
