We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Vermont is avoiding the foreclosure crisis plaguing homeowners across the U.S., perhaps owing to traditions of thrift, modesty and self-reliance -- bolstered by laws that protect buyers and land.
The foreclosure rate in Vermont is the lowest in the U.S., 0.04 percent of all homes in the state, according to RealtyTrac Inc. of Irvine, California.
“People in this part of the country don’t like to risk anything unless they really have to,” said Gary Ely, 71, of St. Johnsbury. “Across the country people charge, charge, charge; people in this part of the country tend to be conservative.”
WOW!! Where did you dig up the old Ski 93 ad! You are very much in my back yard ....skied 'em all even Mittersill I also worked there for a time as a younger man. The chalets in the picture are from Mittersill. They are still trying to attach/join Cannon and Mittersill an effort that has been ongoing, with no success, for over 20 years.
Mittersill itself may well be worth a bit of investigation. Built by European royalty fleeing the Nazi's it was for a time the social must for East Coast Society and assorted hangers on. The register from the front desk includes Princess Elizabeth (before she became Queen) as well as Hollywood's A list from the late 40's through early 60's. It is one of those oddly sad places now, bowed beneath its former glory. Turn left out of the Cannon parking lot and you'll see the sign about a mile down hill on your right.
Glad to have you in my neck of New England! Looks like we've even got some decent weather. Do ski Cannon (..if you can) as it is the single most challenging mountain there is. As the saying goes "....if you can ski Cannon; you can ski anywhere!"
Yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dog's eye.

I'll take the yellow matter custard if you don't have a dollar.
re: Weak women, Heather MacDonald.
"A congressional bill, the Fulfilling the Potential of Women in Academic Science and Engineering Act of 2008, would apply Title IX gender quotas to academic science. Barack Obama endorsed the bill during the presidential campaign;"
Obama is at home with this. Michelle's former job is not being filled. Why? It doesn't need to be filled. I find filling quotas on the basis of anything more than merit to be just disgusting. If women don't want to do research science, they don't. Larry Summers lost his job over simply saying there were more men than women in the sciences and that may be because women are not suited for it. That was too un-PC, and too bad for him. What is up with this workplace social engineering? All it does is piss people off and ignore the fact that if a woman is qualified and willing, she has the job.
Meta ... Mandated life planning for other people's lives is a Democrat specialty. "You vil do it and you vil enjoy it," so to speak. Pisses me off big time too. I was vastly irritated when poor Larry Summers got dissed by the feminist cartel for noting that there were more men than women in the sciences and perhaps they were not as interested in using their skills that way.
Some women are greatly interested in the sciences. People like Marie Curie, for instance. Some not so much. But the busybodies of political correctness aren't content to have the field open for women, if they want to choose science. Oh no. They want to force women into the field willy-nilly. The Education Police and the Life Career Police are working together to make all of us miserable and to limit our freedom of choice in yet another way.
Marianne, We think alike. As I was writing that, I thought of Marie Curie.
I have always disliked the feminist movement. The women who represent it are just too embarrassing. I believe any smart woman can do what she wants, and if she can't, she will find a way around the roadblocks and earn respect.
It gripes me that a bunch of geeky scientists in a research center might 'have' to put up with a woman who is not qualified and that they will suffer for it. It's not right.
