Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Microplastics in water.... now - if the water I'm buying has been prepared using Reverse Osmosis, how can anything be in it, except water, plus whatever trace salts they add back in for flavor? Or.... could this be more of the routine terror mongering that has become customary with Fake News?
If you could drink it straigt from where the reverse osmosis takes place then it would be as clean as most municipal tap water, assuming it takes place in steel or glass. It's the packaging process that creates the plastic particles. A water fountain is much safer and cleaner than a soft plastic bottle.
QUOTE: JD Vance and the Contemporary Media Landscape Stephanopolous asked "whether Tom Homan accepted $50,000 as was heard on an audio tape recorded by the FBI in September 2024, and you did not answer the question." It was a legitimate question. Apparently claiming that Vance "destroyed" Stephanopolous by trying to change the subject and using invective against the questioner IS the "Contemporary Media Landscape". In the late 50's and early 60's the minimum wage was $1.35 an hour. My first car in 1961 was a red 1951 Ford convertible I bought for $50. Today, that $1.35, 5 silver quarters and one dime would be worth about $51. That $50 car would be $1887 in todays money.
Anyone who follows the price of silver and gold knows that the last month and the last 6 months have been dramatic in the precious metals market. Very unusual. Typically this kind of event in silver and gold is accompanied by terrible real world events. While there are some significant events taking place they aren't new in the past few months and in fact most everything you might point to as affecting gold & silver prices has been going on for years. So, what accounts for this sudden dramatic almost unprecedented rise in gold and silver prices? This isn't the middle class or Kulaks buying up all the silver and gold, this is the upper class, the rich, the informed. What do they know that we don't? I don't know! But I will speculate that if you are familiar with agenda 21 and project 2025 you would agree that part of the goal of both of these political plans is to implement social and monetary policies that can be used to lock certain citizens out of banks and social life including jobs. These plans are moving forward throughout the world even if the MSM isn't telling you. The ONLY Western country not moving fast to implement these plans is the U.S. If Trump had not been elected we would be neck and neck with the EU on this. And once Trump is out of office we will be playing catchup. OneGuy: Today, that $1.35, 5 silver quarters and one dime would be worth about $51.
A silver quarter has a current metal value of about $5. A gallon of gas in 1960 cost a bit more than that quarter. The silver value of the same quarter will still purchase a gallon of gas. (The same statement can be applied to milk.) The melt value of a silver quarter at this very moment is $9.39.
If you want to buy one it will cost you about 10% more. A chance would have it I worked at a gas station in 1960 and the price of gas varied from day to day but the low in 1960 was 17.99 cents a gallon. I remember that about 2 miles from the station where I worked gas was about 20.99 cents a gallon. OneGuy: The melt value of a silver quarter at this very moment is $9.39.
Based on the recent run up in silver prices and your own experience: A silver quarter in 1960 would buy a gallon or so of gas. The silver value of the same quarter will still buy a gallon or so of gas. It's not an exact comparison, of course, but it does show remarkable stability over 65 years. Hum. Current silver price is $52.00/oz. Which makes the current value of the 24 grams of silver in a silver dollar worth about $44.28. Hope you're not paying that much for gasoline.
Math be hard. Apparently reading be hard too. In my defense, I hadn't had my coffee when I read and replied. Once the caffeine hit my bloodstream, my mistake hit me.

There were no silver dollars minted in 1960. The last silver dollar minted before then was in 1935. Most were already out of circulation, as inflation meant their melt was worth more than their face value. By the way, 24 grams is 77% of a troy ounce. At the current price, 24 grams is worth about $40. That would buy about 12 gallons of gas; whilst $1 and a few copper pennies in 1960 would buy about 6 gallons of gas. As already noted, it's doubtful anyone would part with a 1930s silver dollar in 1960 due to inflation. They would pay in smaller change such as quarters as discussed, or with paper money. It's not an exact comparison, of course, but it does show remarkable stability over 65 years, even though we are taking the peak of a run up in silver. The same comparison works for a gallon of milk.
