Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

QUOTE: 10th year gender studies student worries Trump will deport her before she graduates next year Jeff thinks the beans have to take turns lmao. Hum. Go ahead, explain the real-world value of a Phd in gender studies. Or any degree in the "field."
Your link just proves the left can't meme. Because first, there isn't any reason the government should be funding grants to study "crop rotation" of beans. Second, there was almost certainly a huge amount of waste and fraud in the grant(s). Thirdly, you're suggesting studying agriculture is somehow comparable to "gender studies." Which is an absurd notion. James: Your link just proves the left can't meme.
Which means you don't (or refuse to acknowledge) the analogy. Some James in the 13th century poo-poos someone who says beans should have a turn in the field. Some James asserts that it is self-evident the idea of giving beans a turn is preposterous. And yes, there is still a lot of scientific research on crop rotation, centuries after Some James first waved his hands. OneGuy: Deport them all, let Venezuela sort them out.
For many people, sending them to Venezuela could be dangerous. Assuming the United States is still a rule-of-law nation, your suggestion would require a change in the law, and possibly a withdrawal from the international Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees. Why would anybody have a reason to seek refuge from the socialist utopia in Venezuela?
mudbug: Why would anybody have a reason to seek refuge from the socialist utopia in Venezuela?
The authoritarian government in Venezuela has dismantled democratic institutions and imposed political repression: Human Rights Watch: Venezuela. Why would anyone be seeking refuge by coming to the United States? Especially if you’re a person of color!
QUOTE: Racial justice remained a *pressing human rights concern in the United States in 2024. The US ratified the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination nearly 60 years ago but has done far too little to implement its provisions. Living legacies of slavery and the slaughter and dispossession of Native peoples remain largely unaddressed. - Human Rights Watch*my bold. So much more at the link. I can’t believe anyone would want to come to this horrible place called America. B. Hammer: I can’t believe anyone would want to come to this horrible place called America.
America isn't perfect. However, there are a number of reasons people would go to America, including political oppression, escaping war, or for economic opportunity. Being an American, I prioritize the welfare of Americans much more than that of citizens of other countries. A good number of those illegal Venezuelans are a threat to the safety of Americans. Almost all will be net service consumers, an expense paid by US citizens. Further, thew illegals who do work undercut American's wages. A plurality, perhaps a majority want us to accommodate their cultural preferences instead of adopting ours. Amazing that you need any of that explained.
In short, only someone who hates the US and wants to see it destroyed could possibly want tens of millions of illegals in the country. Well, you've described Zachriel to a tee. They see those issues as features, not bugs.
Exactly. Which is a point I've made to him repeatedly.

James: You've repeatedly asserted the charge of dog and cat eating is false. Prove it.
And Russell's Teapot is orbiting Mars. James: Being an American, I prioritize the welfare of Americans much more than that of citizens of other countries. Sure (though some of the world's great prophets have taught that all people have inherent dignity and value). James: A good number of those illegal Venezuelans are a threat to the safety of Americans. That's always going to be true when accepting refugees. And yes, there is a social cost to accepting refugees. However, the United States has entered into international agreements and enacted legislation allowing for the entry of refugees. Assuming the United States is still a rule-of-law country, as already pointed out, ending this policy would require a change in the law, and possibly a withdrawal from the international Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees. Refugees have legal status. James: A plurality, perhaps a majority want us to accommodate their cultural preferences instead of adopting ours. You should have more confidence in American culture. The vast majority of immigrants will be naturally assimilated, while also adding to the fabric of American life. Even people in other countries can't escape the overwhelming influence of the West. James: In short, only someone who hates the US and wants to see it destroyed could possibly want tens of millions of illegals in the country. A majority of Americans support accepting refugees. Try actually offering a cogent response to my points instead of snark and highly dubious polling. ("Refugees" does not equal the millions of highly dubious asylum claims made by illegals.)
As to who is trying to destroy American institutions, it isn't a close call: it is the left, and they've been way too successful. That is the primary point of the left supports mass illegal immigration. It's you who lacks confidence in American culture, hence the desire to destroy it. You keep bemoaning the alleged threat Trump represents to the power of the federal bureaucracy. Read the room. You are the only person commenting here, and probably even reading here, that that does not sound like praise to. Everyone else thinks "from your lips to God's ears." Only the left-wing tyrants like yourself and people on the government teat take that as a criticism. Sure (though some of the world's great prophets have taught that all people have inherent dignity and value).
Do you allege that that comment is an argument? Most of the great sacred texts say not only that homosexuality is immoral, but worth of death. Which would seem to exclude SS marriage. What's your take on the moral authority of the prophets? What exactly does separation of church and state mean to you? Or do you take a cafeteria style approach and appeal to religion when it suits your purpose but ignore it when it doesn't? No need to answer that question. It is purely rhetorical. James: Try actually offering a cogent response to my points instead of snark and highly dubious polling. ("Refugees" does not equal the millions of highly dubious asylum claims made by illegals.)
The topic was migrants from Venezuela. ("Deport them all, let Venezuela sort them out.") Over seven million people have fled from Venezuela, most to Latin American countries, which supports the claim about refugees from political and social turmoil in Venezuela. James: You keep bemoaning the alleged threat Trump represents to the power of the federal bureaucracy. The threat is to the checks and balances; in particular, the president's duty to "take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed". The bureaucracy is a creation of Congress, and only Congress, assuming the United States is still a rule-of-law country, can make fundamental changes to that bureaucracy. Otherwise, Congress will be like the Roman Senate under the Caesars, they will debate and argue, but be feckless and impotent. James: Do you allege that that comment is an argument? It wasn't an argument, but a parenthetical. If you don't accept the inherent dignity and value of the individual, then there is no argument that can make you accept it. That's why the argument entailed in the U.S. Declaration of Independence treats human equality as an axiom. QUOTE: The reformation of the senate was one of the first steps in which Augustus laid aside the tyrant, and professed himself the father of his country. He was elected censor; and, in concert with his faithful Agrippa, he examined the list of the senators, expelled a few members, whose vices or whose obstinacy required a public example, persuaded near two hundred to prevent the shame of an expulsion by a voluntary retreat, raised the qualification of a senator to about ten thousand pounds, created a sufficient number of Patrician families, and accepted for himself the honourable title of Prince of the Senate, which had always been bestowed, by the censors, on the citizen the most eminent for his honours and services. But whilst he thus restored the dignity, he destroyed the independence of the senate. The principles of a free constitution are irrevocably lost, when the legislative power is nominated by the executive. — The Decline And Fall Of The Roman Empire, Edward Gibbon QUOTE: The Danger Of A Successful Society: Absurdity The idea is largely correct. People at the center of empire tend to become insulated from the effects of their actions. So, they might engage in foolish foreign wars that costs trillions, but they can borrow the money, so no biggie. Or they can elect an orange carnival barker that dismantles government and social institutions that have taken generations to develop, distracting the public with distorted attacks against disfavored minorities ("They are eating the dogs ... They are eating the cats."), while siphoning off the country's wealth to oligarchic supporters, but the people's lives go on as they have been going on—until they don't. You've repeatedly asserted the charge of dog and cat eating is false. Prove it.
BTW, it is unambiguously true that cat eating is a well-established tradition in Hati. On what basis do you confidently assert that no Hattian illegals did so in the US? Hum. Again. Federal expenditures on means tested social spending in FY '23 was about $1.6 trillion. Not only does that figure doubtlessly include huge amounts of fraud, abuse, and waste, it excludes revenue lost because of the lost productivity the welfare recipients would have generated if forced to work. Additionally, its primary function is vote buying for democrats.
Nor does it begin to account for the massive social costs of welfare, the antisocial and dysfunctional behavior it causes or enables. The fiscal costs of those behaviors is also massive. Out of curiosity, exactly how would you characterize the Biden "presidency"? Just FYI, you could actually respond to the points/arguments made in the link. While you're responding, go ahead and defend calling the USA an "empire."
James: You've repeatedly asserted the charge of dog and cat eating is false.
And Russell's Teapot is orbiting Mars. James: Federal expenditures on means tested social spending in FY '23 was about $1.6 trillion. Most of which is spending on healthcare, including for children and the elderly. But sure. Huge structural deficits are a sign of internal decay. It's not inevitable, as Clinton showed, but the political price can be high. James: Out of curiosity, exactly how would you characterize the Biden "presidency"? Middling. Biden had significant successes, but also significant failures. James: you could actually respond to the points/arguments made in the link. Did that: "distracting the public with distorted attacks against disfavored minorities" {trans, experts, Hunter Biden, gender studies, gays, therapy}. James: go ahead and defend calling the USA an "empire." You could start with the American global military presence, not to mention controlling the world's global currency. No sense arguing semantics, though. Let's restate: People at the center of a great global power tend to become insulated from the effects of their actions. The United States, to its credit, created a global system where every country would have a say in its future and a share of its resources. The United States would be first among equals, acting in concert with its like-minded allies to create security and to prevent another great conflagration that had consumed the first half of the twentieth century. That project has been phenomenally successful. The world is growing up. Other countries want a more equal say in global affairs. The United States will inevitably decline relative to other countries, a natural outgrowth of the American project. The United States can remain first among equals for the foreseeable future, but not if they insist on fracturing their alliances, weakening the global trading system, and bullying other countries who don't kowtow to them. re Feminists Are Begging For Men To Come Back But Still Blame Them For Everything
This is a great read and is spot on. If you only read one link today, I would suggest this one. I agree completely. Great article.
Reminds me of a line from a later Jack Nicholson movie: "Women are just like men: just remove the reason and the accountability." AI is doing to the universities what Gutenberg did to the monasteries
A VERY LONG piece where the author posits that today's university system is analogous to the monasteries of the 1500s, on the brink of collapse due to changing technology. It is quite good. Username checks out. :-)
That's a joke, in case anyone didn't get it. :-) If all they're doing with "stolen IDs and SS cards" is using them to get jobs and work, hell! they can steal mine.
The individual illegals aren’t stealing IDs, the cartels are. The cartels then sell the IDs to the illegals. The illegals are now even more dependent on the cartels and the cartels, like other organized criminals, gain power and influence over the employers using the illegal workers and any politicians that may be bribed, coerced or otherwise compromised. Everyone involved has moral agency and should be held accountable.
And what does a Mexican drug cartel pressure a lettuce farmer or a chicken processor plant owner to do? I've missed the news stories about this being a problem.
As I said. "the moral agency" issue of using fake ID to get a job and work does not make me lose any sleep. One more for you from CC:
