Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

The article on Ukraine's Leopard 2 Tanks is intentionally misleading. In the article they admit that indeed they aren't all destroyed or broken. The simple truth is in battle a tank is a target. Most of them are doomed as soon as the shooting starts. Russia has lost an unbelievable number of tanks. Russia has all the advantages in this battle. They have 1000 times more resources than Ukraine and their supply line is incredibly short compared to Ukraine's supply line. And yet Russia has taken record casualties and equipment losses all of which indicates incredible incompetence on the part of their leaders.
Losing sucks. I understand your pain and frustration but I'll be damned if I'll pay another penny for it.
Don't miss the point. They were always going to lose and we should never have given them money or billions in munitions. They should fight to save their country but they shouldn't be trying to match Russia's might. This should have been a gorilla war not tank and air battles. Ukraine was always going to lose but their job was to make it so costly that Russia wouldn't want to win that way again.
The point is that the author intentionally lied and then lied by omission. Everyone who reports on the Ukraine seems compelled to lie. Therefore we have no idea what is happening there. I spoke at a company meeting in the Bedford Springs Resort in 2008. It was certainly open and glorious at that time.
The article doesn't really say when it shut or reopened. Bedford Springs Resort re-opened in summer 2007 after the renovations. It's a gorgeous property, but nothing over the top about it in any way. Dignified respect for the past but down to earth and reasonably upscale.
Worth a visit, the Bedford region is remote but easily accessible by highways, and the surrounding area is the foothills of the Alleghenys, so there are significant geological and cultural transitions. Wondering what other faculty at Harvard made I found this site
https://www.univstats.com/salary/harvard-university/faculty/#google_vignette Full professors on 12 month contracts make about 1/3 what Gay makes. What is really amazing is what a pit of sexual ugliness Harvard is for all its virtue signalling. Full women professors on 12 month contracts make $40,000 a year less than male full professors. Other ranks have similar disparities. Shameful. Where's the equity? "How many American cats live largely or entirely outdoors? (More than a hundred million.) What proportion of them kill birds? (More than half.)"
Of course, all the Cat People are aghast, shrieking that "cats kill vermin." Which is OK if you live on a farm, but in the city? Get back to me when the feral cats start killing anti-semites and I might be persuaded. We've tried to keep our cats indoors, but it's not always possible. Had one old moggie that we would put out in the back yard on a leash, and she would still catch the occasional unwary bird. However, as has been said elsewhere, her prey were generally unwary sparrows while the "green" bird-blenders are taking out the eagles and other endangered species.
And - Mike - we do depend on our cats to keep the mice out of our home. Was reading the paper early one morning when I realized one of our cats was playing with a toy like she hadn't done for years. Then I realized that 1) it wasn't a toy and 2) it was alive. So - being a liberated woman - I headed upstairs to wake my husband and let him deal with the situation. He got downstairs to find cat taking rather battered mouse down to the basement, presumably to release it for another round. Husband dispatched mouse with slipper. But, generally, the mouse incursion (and we live near a park so they head our way in the autumn, is minimized by the presence of a cat. re "How many American cats live largely or entirely outdoors? One wonders how they came up with those numbers? There are feral cats in the country but I haven't seen anyone counting them. Indeed, they are hard to find. Since cats have been eating birds since time immemorial, one wonders why the cat haters think it is a problem? Are they as concerned about the birds being chopped up by windmills or is this yet another case of selective indignation? People that hate cats were probably mice in a previous life. In a remote corner of California, roaming dog packs leave a trail of blood and terror
No mention is made of them eating birds so its probably ok. https://news.yahoo.com/remote-corner-california-roaming-dog-110046318.html re CNN anchor assures viewers that Claudine Gay did not plagiarize
Well, it is to be expected that a friendly media will defend Gay. As she will return to teaching duties, one wonders if she is okay if her students "copying other people’s writings without attribution"? I would think it would be perfectly okay after she set the example. Retaining her speaks volumes of Harvard's attitude towards honesty and ethics. NY Times on climate doom... Newt Gingrich has good thoughts on what’s motivating democrats to vote: The Gravy Train. It’s just another example of the shortsightedness and stupidity of the Republican Party. When is the last time Congress passed a budget? As a further example of the Uniparty that rules us, they don’t pass budgets because discretionary spending goes from the treasury to the democrat collation made up of: teachers’ union, the government employees’ unions, the AFL-CIO, the Service Employees International Union, every environmental group, the LBGTQ crowd and hundreds more. A conservative is forced to pay for his own destruction. Remember when the democrats were so keen on keeping money out of politics? It’s the end of democracy if they don’t get their money and their agenda.
It's as though they simply can't fathom the idea of shutting down the federal government. Shut it down and no back pay for the shut down period. It is the only way to get the attention of the professional grifter class.
One of the popular misunderstandings of the dollar story is the exaggerated significance of treasury bonds and notes. The story is that other nations and investors bought up all our debt in the form of treasury notes and bonds. This was true once and it is about 5% true today. Of our $34 trillion dollar debt probably less that $3 trillion is actually owned by other nations and investors while the remainder is owned by the FED and was purchased with fake money. In other words in a typical fiscal year we incur $2 trillion in debt that no one wants to buy so the FED makes a notation on paper/computer that they bought it for $2 trillion and they make a notation somewhere else that they printed/created $2 trillion. The money is never actually printed it is just inflation and a bunch of numerals on a computer somewhere. It is a house of cards, a Potemkin village, a lie. It makes gold worth $2000+ and kicks the can down the road. But the Saudi's and China "mostly" got out of treasuries years ago.
Ozempic and Wegovy. If you go off your blood pressure meds your BP goes back up too. Sometimes more, though not usually.
And resuming alcohol abuse is usually worse also. Life is unfair. |
