Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

QUOTE: Is Race a thing? . . . “Race is a social construct with no basis in reality Just because race is an ill-defined biological term doesn't mean it doesn't have social reality. If a society were to decide (it could happen this way) that
LOL. As evidenced by your reply, you didn't even read the article.
Zachriel: What doesn't it know? Astrophysicist, property lawyer, affirmative action expert, search engine, newspeak dictionary, constitutional scholar, carrier of Trump Derangement Syndrome, master of the non sequitur, pretentious movie critic, high school civics teacher, financial analyst, the ackchyually guy, nitpicker, Historical art critic, armchair economist, poverty expert, theoretician of science, Covid apologist, speech therapist, climate scientist, civil engineer, sociologist. Zachriel is often referred to as the 'angel of memory'. Yes, that's just how pretentious and narcissistic this ridiculous troll is. He fancies himself an archangel that leads souls to judgement. Why else would the clown busy himself in an endless debate with people that have absolutely no ideological common ground with him? ;)
OFF-TOPIC
Lord Heathen: Zachriel is often referred to as the 'angel of memory'. Don't worry, Lord Heathen. Zachriel is only in the 6th sphere. Zachriel is certainly not as pretentious and exalted as your Lordship. As for debate, we didn't realize pointing out that social constructs have very real social consequences was ideological. The Gramsci, Horkheimer, Marcuse imported Frankfort school was ideological. It was second wave Marxism modified to move from class warfare to race/gender warfare.

This is not a defense of Roger Taney.
Do you know anything about Roger Taney, other than the infamous Dred Scott? Did you know he was married to the sister, Ann, of Francis Scott Key? Did you know that he and Ann were part of a legal aid society that challenged the kidnapping of free blacks into slavery? Did you know that he emancipated 11 of his inherited slaves? Did you know that he once won a case, defending a Methodist preacher from charges of inciting slave rebellion? Taney defended the preacher on free speech grounds - something a modern democrat would never do. Taney said the institution of slavery was a necessary evil, at best and was, “…imposed upon us by another nation, while we were yet in a state of colonial vassalage. It cannot be easily or suddenly removed. Yet while it continues, it is a blot on our national character, and every real lover of freedom confidently hopes that it will be effectually, though it must be gradually, wiped away, and earnestly looks for the means by which this necessary object may be best attained. And until it shall be accomplished, until the time shall come when we can point, without blush, to the language held in the Declaration of Independence, every friend of humanity will seek to lighten the galling chain of slavery and better, to the utmost of his power, the wretched condition of the slave.” What happened to the man who wrote those words, compared to what he opined in Dred Scott? What part did the death of his wife and daughter, succumbing to yellow fever, in 1855, play on his emotions? One wonders. For more, see Dred Scott: the Supreme Court's Worst Decision
As for the original topic, the article builds its argument on a false notion. Social constructs have very real social consequences. In particular, the idea of what constitutes "white people" has changed substantially over time. QUOTE: Ben Franklin: That the Number of purely white People in the World is proportionably very small. All Africa is black or tawny. Asia chiefly tawny. America (exclusive of the new Comers) wholly so. And in Europe, the Spaniards, Italians, French, Russians and Swedes, are generally of what we call a swarthy Complexion; as are the Germans also, the Saxons only excepted, who with the English, make the principal Body of White People on the Face of the Earth. Yup. Franklin and others of his time considered Swedes to be too swarthy to be considered white people. You have no ideas about why Taney turned? I thought you are a sociologist?
Which article? Tran, or Singal? From the previous paragraph in your Franklin quote, it sounds like he was concerned about those Germans taking over Pennsylvania. Maybe he had a premonition of 1939. Perhaps, the same thoughts that every clique since time began has had about the migrant. Especially migrants that show no interest in assimilation. People are impatient. Some people play upon those fears and stoke the bad feelings; never let the scar heal. Mostly it’s for power and money. See Obama, Jesse Jackson, Louis Farrakhan, the Reverend Al Sharpton. Et al. Showing that peculiar thoughts on race, are not the sole domain of white people: QUOTE: "Thoughtful white people know they are inferior to black people. Anyone who has studied the genetic phase of biology knows that white is considered recessive and black is considered dominant. When you want strong coffee, you ask for black coffee. If you want it light, you want it weak, integrated with white milk. - Malcolm X Riddle me this Batman. Why are white people trying to change their race to one of a swarthy complexion? B. Hammer: You have no ideas about why Taney turned? I thought you are a sociologist?
We never claimed any expertise, but that seems like a psychological question, not a sociological one. Nor does it appear relevant to the question of the social impacts of social constructs. It was a common enough view at the time. B. Hammer: Which article? Tran, or Singal? From the quote included in our original comment, we are referring Singal’s straw man, "Race is a social construct with no basis in reality”. Tran refers to “‘biological races’ themselves are not real,” with scare quotes to emphasize the distinction. However, socially constructed races exist as social phenomena. As for Franklin, the quote was just included to show how the socially constructed notion of white people has changed over time. B. Hammer: Why are white people trying to change their race to one of a swarthy complexion? It’s actually far more common for dark skinned people to try to lighten their complexion, modify their hair or facial features, or even “pass” for white. Dark complexions have historically been associated with workers, while the rich stayed indoors. However, in the 20th century, this was reversed in some cultures when suntans became associated with the leisure class while working people spent their days indoors. Other, less common examples, are people who identify with another culture, and may adopt ethnic characteristics associated with that culture.

Z: It was a common enough view at the time.
For instance, this statement was voted on and agreed to by elected representatives, which demonstrates its wide currency: QUOTE: A Declaration Of the Causes which impel the State of Texas to secede from the Federal Union (1861): We hold as undeniable truths that the governments of the various States, and of the confederacy itself, were established exclusively by the white race, for themselves and their posterity; that the African race had no agency in their establishment; that they were rightfully held and regarded as an inferior and dependent race, and in that condition only could their existence in this country be rendered beneficial or tolerable.

In defense of Taney ...
Taney actually had little choice in the decision as pre civil war we were 'Citizens' of the states and not of the United States. When Missouri decided he was not free as he was not a 'Citizen of the State', the case was over. It was likely more practical to refuse the case at the SCOTUS level but that did not happen. He was not a 'Citizen' and had no standing in court. After the civil war the amendment was added to provide that previous slaves were now 'citizens of the United States'. As time followed states began making them 'citizens of the State'. Notice the capitalization and lack of capitalization of 'citizen'. There is a difference in meaning when applied to the Constitution. One applies to the body of the Constitution and the other applies to the Bill of Rights amendments. Also, unknown to most is that Indians were excluded in the amendment discussions. Some years later Congress passed a law that Indians were now 'citizens' but because it wasn't acted upon as an amendment to the Constitution, it likely gives them no standing as 'citizens of the United States,' but their tribal lands do have virtually all the protections of State citizens as nearly all tribes are independent of the States which they are a part. They are citizens of the tribe. I’m reading the TGIF thread. It’s going along, skimming the surface into the Biden family corruption. What about Trump being corrupt, which seems to be the democrat talking point about the Biden corruption. And then she states, I don’t want either Trump or Biden. Okay. I’m fine with that. But then I have to quit reading. “Chris Christie, what up!” The fat slob who shut down every beach in New Jersey, and then was caught on film, oozing out of his lawn chair on the beach! That Chris Christie? And the very next sentence is that she doesn’t want the highest office defiled by petty corruption. Oh gee whiz, as my favorite commenter likes to say.
What passes for education today.
Administrators and teachers attend education schools that teach the fine arts of grooming children to government standards. Then they head out to the work world where they practice their newly learned arts of the groomer in their groomer friendly public school. If they are fortunate, they may find a job teaching in a private or parochial school but they still have undergone the grooming process themselves. We need states to develop funding programs that attach the funds to the student/parent rather than the institution. And we need teacher programs that stress expertise in subject matter rather than expertise in grooming for government. If you don't like how much stuff costs now, just wait until the government makes it free. Freedom and responsibility are two sides of the same coin. If you want to be free to make your own choices, you have to be responsible for the consequences of those choices. If, on the other hand, you want government to give you free stuff you have to accept whatever terms and conditions they impose on it. You want free health care? Be prepared to be told you can't smoke, you can't drink, you can't eat snack food, you can't refuse vaccinations that don't work and have sketchy side effect issues, and you're not the one who gets to decide when your quality of life makes it not worth spending any more on your healthcare.
I think they should do it now. If you have an EBT card here are the items that are verboten. If you’re on government insurance, no smoking or drinking. When someone else is paying the freight you have two options: go along with their rules, or decline those benefits.
QUOTE: Jack Smith's impossible task . . . All of these claims in Jack Smith's new indictment depend on it being unreasonable to believe that the 2020 election was stolen. To overcome this defense with regards to the alleged fraud under 18 U.S.C. § 371, the government will have to show that Trump knew* he lost the election. There is some evidence of this, though whether it will convince a jury beyond a reasonable doubt won’t be known until more evidence is brought forward. However, not all counts in the indictment depend on Trump’s belief. Just because you believe the bank has stolen your money doesn’t mean you can legally rob them to get your money back. The indictments for U.S.C. § 1512(k), § 1512(c)(2), and 8 U.S.C. § 241 do not depend on Trump’s belief that he won the election. * “Reckless disregard of whether a statement is true, or a conscious effort to avoid learning the truth.” Chat GPT yesterday!

Let That Be Your Last Battlefield Diabetes is genetic. Black people have it at 4 times the rate of whites of European descent. It's because of farming vs hunter gather. American Indians have diabetes at a rate over ten times that of white Europeans. Again the hunter gather thingy. Australian Bush people have it at the highest rate with South Pacific Islanders a close 2nd. Hunter gatherer again.
