Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Let's celebrate Poison Ivy

Poison Ivy is a native vine to North America. Apparently humans are the creatures for whom it is an annoying weed. Animals seem to like it.


When your dog runs through a patch, be careful about hugging your dog. 


I've had plenty of unpleasant experiences of it in my life. Now I know that Dawn detergent after contact is a miracle. Sometimes it is difficult to avoid.

Technu Extreme and Zanfel are useful scrubbing agents to try to remove the evil urushiol oils that cause the reaction.

Last year I had an unknown exposure (I am always hyper-alert for the stuff) that simply would not go away after weeks of scrubbing. Had to resort to prednisone after a doctor visit and it still took three weeks to clear up. Yuck.

I spent years as a kid running through the woods in nothing more than a t-shirt and shorts and never got it. Yet my mother constantly would get it from gardening and yardwork.

Is there a genetic factor in sensitivity to poison ivy?

Again, same for me. Then, at 25, I got a bad case of it and have gotten it off and on for years and now get it every summer because I stupidly run through the woods for hours. But that makes me happy, so.

I'm so sensitive to it that I'm afraid to write it or say it for fear of breaking out.
I learned a long time ago that at the least exposure to take a shower and scrub thoroughly with Dawn followed by scrubbing with Tecnu.
After that I take a Benedryl.
The clothes I'm wearing get washed first in degreaser, then in Dawn, and finally in laundry detergent.
Even after all that it will take me about 2 weeks to stop breaking out.

You can see that urushiol is a catechol on a long fatty chain.
Most soaps today do not have a high enough pH to hydrolyze the chain or ionize and react the catechol(pKa(1) 9.25). Ivory soap (pH 9.5) and laundry detergent seem to work for me but my mothers home made laundry soap was the best.
