We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Fire Experts Say Western States Need To Clear Out Mismanaged Forests
Wildfire is essential to many Western ecosystems. It's natural. Fire suppression leads to greater fires. No forest management can replace the good that fire does. Not so good for loggers or people in living in fire zones though. Just for ecosystems.

It appears as if someone at Duck Duck Go isn't a fan of Maggie's Farm since the site has been de-listed. That isn't completely true- on page three there's a link to an archive page, but I couldn't find anything else. Even the censoring google has Maggie's in the top three. . . .
MF comes up #4 for me in answer to "Maggie's Farm blog" query at DDG.
I typed “Maggies Farm” in Duck Duck Go search line, this site is the third listed. After Bob Dylan and the pot shop in Manitou Springs Colorado.
I had trouble accessing this website on Sunday and Monday. I use Duck Duck Go, too, but since Tuesday I haven't had any trouble. Wonder what is going on???
The similar name selling the all important pot products is far more worthy according to pot heads.
This laptop story is a real eyeopener. What was the FBI playing at, when they sat on exculpatory impeachment evidence? If they realized the explosiveness of the content, why didn't they warn the DNC off Biden? Did they think that, if the story dropped, they had complete control of the viable evidence? Did they think they could manage the damage with the ole Liar, Liar, Liar..... Russia, Russia, Russia shtick? Are they all being blackmailed?
Oops, forgot to include: Was the deep state going to use this evidence as leverage over Biden?
Yesterday I read someone who was crowing about Trump's 'secret' Chinese bank account, the one that he noted on his tax return. IT'S ON HIS TAX RETURN!!! How is that a secret?? The answer is, it's not a secret, and it's not any of their business, either. Remember that saying from our childhood: "Mind your business"? With the internet, everyone has come to think that everything is their business, to be immediately gratified.
So it is with the laptop, I think. The FBI runs investigations, lots of them. They have procedures; Procedures take time, Grand Jury subpoenas take time, evidence collection, verification, case preparation take time, and it can all fall to pieces with one legal misstep, as we see frequently. So they've had the laptop for almost a year. So they haven't said anything. So they didn't bail out the President during his sham impeachment. So what? They're minding their business. It sounds to me as if they are in the middle of an investigation.
Think of it this way: What real damage did Trump suffer from the impeachment - for a non-crime, which most people understand was political exercise - and would you have traded that for what is shaping up as a major corruption case involving the Obama administration? Some are saying that one of the unspoken impeachment goals was to understand how much evidence there was, by forcing Trump to reveal it, using it for his own defense. Looks like he didn't take that bait, if true.
And yet it’s been nine months and did the FBI interview any of the other people on those emails? Cooney got tired of being the fall guy and gave his Gmail account information to an investigative reporter. Don’t you think the FBI should have been talking to him?
It’s always amazed me that someone like Peter Schweizer can investigate a scandal, conduct interviews, compile documentary evidence, write a book, have it edited (which likely involved some efforts at independent corroboration), have it printed, and distributed and our DOJ and FBI know nothing about it. After the book is on the NYT best seller list for months, they seem no more interested in the scandal than they were before.
I'm not saying it doesn't look bad, but none of this means anything comparing it to an FBI investigation. It's gratifying to have this stuff see the light of day, to see these exposes (when they're not censored), but I would rather see prosecutions, and there's no getting around the fact they take time and are difficult to progress. It's frustrating because it seems wrong.
I also can't help but notice that, away from the spotlight, there seem to be a lot - a metric sh*t-ton, in fact - of cases being brought to trial that involve public office corruption, graft, sexual predation / pedophilia, and now money laundering, all of notable public figures - people in charge, in other words, not simple lowlifes. And they are getting convictions. And with the banks paying massive fines for money laundering, now they are going after the bankers who did it. And next, will be their customers, who did it.
Something is being taken apart, and I am liking it. Trump/Barr DOJ has spent the past few years putting these cases together, and they are bearing fruit, and it is killing the DNC fundraising machinery.
Given the Democrat fundraising I've heard about, it's hard to say that anything has inhibited it (eg. the $$ Lindsey Graham's challenger has raised)
But to your point about setting up prosecutions: I hope you're right but so far I see scant evidence of it. Usually in an criminal investigation, the indictment of a little fish is used to get the goods on the next bigger fish who is then indicted to help catch the fish above him. Rinse and repeat till you get to the top. There have been no indictments related to Biden the lesser's laptop - after almost a year! Why would Cooney feel the need to contact Schweizer if he thought the FBI was going to make it so he wasn't the only one to take the fall. There's no evidence that the FBI even talked to him. The FBI sat on the laptop during Trump's impeachment. It would take very little to corroborate enough evidence that Hunter was up to no good and that it was appropriate that Trump ask about that situation. There is no evidence that Barr is any more on the ball, given the frustration Trump has shown.
I am becoming less optimistic about Durham's investigation too. He has made one indictment. We have heard nothing since them. Could they have sealed indictments? I hope that's the case, but I would think that a public indictment would be more effective at flushing out the rats since it would be more obvious that their ship was sinking. I still hold out some hope that their dealing with the deep state might require a more stealthy approach but, as I say, I'm becoming less optimistic.
Mrs. Obama heaped praise on the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement as “an overwhelmingly peaceful movement for racial solidarity.”
That might be true, but when your race is about 14% of the population and there's another race that's about 70% of the population, you might want to be a little careful about celebrating racial solidarity. But then I guess if Michelle only became proud of this country once it elected her husband President, I guess since her husband is no longer President she's no longer proud of this country so why would she care what happens to it?
Apparently it’s ok for blacks to promote “racial solidarity.” I wonder if it would be alright for whites to also promote “racial solidarity?” Or world those whites be called “white supremacists?”
It's ok if blacks use the N word - but no other ethnicity can use that worfd
Joe Biden released a questionable new ad saying that America "never lived up" to it's ideals, and he's getting absolutely hammered for it on Twitter. WELL!!!! I am AMAZED that Twitter would let let this go on! Did the censor call in sick? Did the censor QUIT? Did Twitter get RELIGION?????

Think the "deep state" isn't real? Over 50 current and ex security leaders declared that the Biden laptop was a Russian plot. If they are in the security business they would know, right? But the lied. They hoped the lie wouldn't be exposed until after the election. Why would "good" government officials lie about something like this? Unless they are protecting the deep state...
If Biden wins, after the election it'll all disappear.
If he doesn't win, then it'll be time to get it out.
Senate committee votes to go ahead with SC ACB. Dem's cry foul because they didn't go to the meeting. I sure hope they are giving back that part of their paycheck for not doing their job.

Re: Wildfires in the west.
The media is trying to re-write this story also. Fact: up until the era of Bill Clinton for many years the US Forest service did have a policy to put out every fire almost immediately-- within 24 hours. This policy allowed the timber to grow large. Also during this time the USFS believed in clear cutting--a terrible system that was disgusting to both the timber community and the people who understood snow fall management, water run off, etc. In comes Billy boy the wonder and supported by the Greenpeace and other extreme environmentalists at that time he was able to put in place a policy that required the USFS to allow the timber to burn free--to destroy those trees which could have/ should have been logged in a way that was not clear cutting. Other countries have been selectively managing their forests without the extreme clear cutting measures that were in place prior to Bill Clinton. HOWEVER, and this is the key piece. The policy of allowing the fires to run wild was supported by someone thinking that "the Indians used to do it". More recently it has been acknowledged that the Indians were not in the least concerned about sustainable forest management. Rather, they were setting small fires to burn the animals out from the cover of the forest so they could hunt! We do not know if they posted guards around the expected perimeter of these burns in order to control them--anyway our enlightened president mandated free burning wildfires to this day. Let us also examine the roll that Chicago unions played in organizing wild land firefighters into an organized union group. How many times I have watched as large numbers of guys in pick up trucks drive in to pre-determined grassy areas where the union is setting up tents, showers, mess hall, etc. It will be at least three days before they even start to fight the fire!
Now the important question will be this: will the USFS again be wildly out of control of their logging practices, or will they design logging practices and undergrowth burn outs (controlled burns) well. Have they learned anything in the past 25 years?
For more info on the policy in place click here:
"clear cutting--a terrible system"
Actually, no! Some forests can only be clear cut. In the East the hardwood forests can be culled or selectively harvested. In fact it is the preferred choice. But in the West the dominant trees don't lend themselves to this kind of harvesting. The result of selective harvesting in these forests prevent reforestation and results in increased growth of scrub and other undesirable trees. The best wat to cut Western forests is to remove it all and replant. Clear cutting makes good sense from a scientific point of view and from an ecological point of view. I admit to the naive, it looks bad, But you almost never see those opposed to clear cutting show the same forests after 20 years or 50 years. Or see them compare a clear cut that was replanted 50 years ago with a selective cut after 50 years of growth. Instead they prefer to show a clear cut the day after the loggers finished, even before the replanting. It's kind of like taking a persons words out of context because in context it doesn't support your viewpoint.
Actually it depends on the variables--which side of the mountain, how deep in the gully, how much sun, how steep the terrain. All of these things contribute to an informed and well planned effort to log and preserve. What is a good system in CA may not be appropriate in WY or MT, etc. Clear cutting just reduces the cost of timber. I do not understand the argument that "selective harvesting prevents reforestation. You can replant in an area that has been selectively harvested. While I agree with you the media only shows the ugliness of the day after a clear cutting, neither side wants the public to see that it is still a great barren scar on the landscape 20 years later. Nor is there a discussion of snow pack in this conversation, which in some areas should be a critical part of the conversation!
You are taking the popular eco-view and of course simultaneously blaming the timber industry of choosing to clear cut because it is the most profitable method. The simple fact is that the western forests/trees to not repropagate effectively after a selective cutting. The process allows undesirable plants to take hold and push out the natural trees.
Believe it or not, not all steep slopes slough off after a clear cut. In my state clear cuts used to be the norm and I have hunted in forests that range from a few years old (after a clear cut and replant) to 50-70 years old. Steep slopes, canyons, everything and the negative effects you allude to are uncommon. It has more to do with the geology of the land, and 100-500 year floods. Ironically these same two causes of landslides will devastate a intact forest too. Muddy clay soils and heavy rains take their toll. But in most of the PNW the soils are consistent with clear cutting and replanting. Happens every year on 100's of 1000's of acres and eco-problems are rare.
Thank you for your thoughts, but I would like us to pursue more science for each area before laying down a convenient blanket strategy for all terrain.
Just down the street from where I live the university has the largest Forestry program in the U.S. Do you think this has not been studied and that science simply doesn't know the answers yet. What I referenced is the science minus the political influence and climate change grifters.
Early 1900s comic predicts the mobile phone. Calls the prospect a “modern horror.” This cartoon by W.K.Hasleden was published in the Daily Mirror in 1919 with the following title: ‘The Pocket Telephone: When will it ring!’
IMHO neither union thug, nor radical environmentalist, nor timber company accountant should be sitting at the table when a new forest management plan is designed. What we need is a very scientific understanding of each terrain, and then we must agree on purpose and aim. Keep bully bargaining out of the process of designing a new strategy.
