We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
They hated him before he was elected b/c they had no leverage over him. We saw this happen with a lot of the Tea Party freshmen in the House who were elected and before that a group of Contract with America freshmen. J.C. Watts was a bit cryptic on why he left, but he hinted that to be able to be effective he would have had to compromise his principles. Those who get elected without leverage over them are either pushed out or compromised. I believe we saw this happen with Paul Ryan; he sold out to gain power.
They hate him because he isn't a politician, isn't part of the club and he isn't giving them the expected and usual access to the public trough. The Dems hate him because he is about to expose their graft and corruption. The press hates him because he is exposing their long term collusion with dishonest Dems. Some business leaders hate him because his honesty and policies are interfering with their screwing over the American people. China hates him because he is cutting back on their exploitation of the U.S. market. Europe hates him because he is cutting back on their exploitation of the U.S. market. The UN hates him because he is rejecting and exposing their fraud, waste and abuse. The Warmies hate him because he is speaking truth to their lies and exposing their global domination plans.
Because he's an unusually successful president? Well, maybe - but that's a pretty low bar. And that's really why they hate him, he exposed the fact that all the movers and shakers, the rich and the powerful, our moral and intellectual superiors, the anointed priesthood in all their glory and majesty are nothing but frauds and conmen, easily undone by the likes of Donald J Trump. Everything you might say about what an awful human being Trump is might be true - but he beat Hillary Clinton, the most qualified person ever to run for President. Which tells you what "qualifications" in Washington DC are worth these days, and what they've really been worth all along. And that's what's driven them insane - they have to believe that Trump's an idiot, but if Trump's an idiot, what does it say about them that he outsmarted them?
They hate him, because unlike Republican presidents of the last 70 years (excepting Reagan), Trump is making a difference against the Progressive forced-march.
Without getting into the comparative defects of Clinton and Trump (disclosure: I’m #NeverTrump), I think it’s useful to remind everyone of the ways in which having a Republican president hasn’t made all that much difference for the last fifty years, with Ronald Reagan as the one exception.
--Charles Murray, AEIdeas, May 2016, 'A Reality Check About Republican Presidents
Murray was hoping to convince Republicans/Conservatives to vote for Hillary since historically Republican presidents didn't change much. Instead, a constitutional majority of voters went for something completely different and as it turns out, Trump has been very different that the Combine.
