Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

You know, your thinking is starting to come around nicely, Zachriel, soon you'll be one of us! You've highlighted this distinction expertly: One is a group of citizens exercising their 1st, 9th, 15th, and 19th Amendment rights in a legal fashion as legal citizens, as opposed to the other group, which consists of: Willful non-citizen lawbreakers, all in search of something new, but at someone else's expense. Why not try legal immigration? Having been through the process I can tell you, it ain't so bad. Saludos. Or maybe the Zzzz prefer thugs harassing men, women and their families in public places because they work in the Trump administration or belong to the Republican party.
Cowardz all. Back to your sandbox, kiddiez. Aggie: One is a group of citizens exercising their 1st, 9th, 15th, and 19th Amendment rights in a legal fashion as legal citizens, as opposed to the other group, which consists of: Willful non-citizen lawbreakers, all in search of something new, but at someone else's expense.
Perhaps you misread the point. "To listen to open-borders advocates, left-wing journalists and Democrats in Congress, the U.S. is a hellhole of misery and bigotry". People can protest about what they see as failings in America, yet America still be a beacon for others. Or are you saying that "left-wing journalists and Democrats in Congress" aren't citizens? You missed again, Z. Most of the open borders trolls who are "protesting" what they claim are "failings" of the US aren't saying that the country is great except that these flaws need to be fixed. They say the country is fundamentally inhuman and corrupt and that the racists of this country voted in other inhuman corrupt racists who can only be defeated by importing new voters who will vote them out.

Aggie,
If America Is So Bad, Why Do They Keep Coming Here? To listen to suffragettes, the U.S. is a hellhole of misery and bigotry". If America Is So Bad, Why Do They Keep Coming Here? To listen to civil rights marchers, the U.S. is a hellhole of misery and bigotry". If America Is So Bad, Why Do They Keep Coming Here? To listen to abolitionists, the U.S. is a hellhole of misery and bigotry". Get off my lawn, you hippie! Why do democrats, and the rich celebrities specifically, spend so much time deriding America, and threatening to leave after every Republican since Coolidge, but never follow through?
You send me to some website with all these liers saying how they would “like to think” they would help the poor souls showing up on their lawn. But we know it isn’t true . Not to mention that 90% of Republicans, give more to charity, than liberals. And of course, you are miss directing again, leaving out legal , before immigrant. I can only imagine what these do gooders would do to the poor immigrant if he showed up on their lawn wearing a MAGA hat? Oh, know I don’t . B. Hammer: And of course, you are miss directing again, leaving out legal , before immigrant.
Once again, the point wasn't just about immigration, but "If America is so bad" according to protesters, why do people keep coming here. The answer is that people can protest defects in society without rejecting the whole of society. Mudbug argues that modern protesters are rejecting the whole of society, but that is an overgeneralization from the extremes, extremes found among previous protest movements, as well. Do we need to quote Malcolm X? Wasn't that implicit in our original comment? B. Hammer: But we know it isn’t true You link to a Forbes article, but if you read the actual study, it doesn't support the claim about millionaires, much less about whether people would help someone in need who showed up at their house. B. Hammer: Not to mention that 90% of Republicans, give more to charity, than liberals. Only if you include churches under charity. Most liberals live in states that provide more social services.

I noticed you didn't answer my direct question, obfuscator!
The study says, "California lost a very small but statistically significant percentage of high-income residents.." We know that Californians are fleeing California, just ask anybody in Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Texas, Montana, to name a few states. At any Rockies game against a California team, half the stadium is rooting for the California team! Just as one example. But you wouldn't know anything about life in the real world. Being electrons floating around in your Abstruse Module 2018. Since when is giving to a church not charity? Social services sure aren't charity. That is forced coercion. What percentage of my forced coercion, goes to the bureaucrats? 70-80%, I'm sure. Most Christian charities run about 5-10%, and it is not a forced donation.

B. Hammer: The study says, "California lost a very small but statistically significant percentage of high-income residents.."
That's a paraphrase. The actual study says, "Both in absolute terms, and compared to sensible control groups, we find little migration response to changes in top tax rates." This certainly doesn't indicate that millionaires as a group are 'fleeing' California. B. Hammer: Since when is giving to a church not charity? Churches are treated as charity in the U.S. tax code for historical reasons, but that doesn't mean church contributions are charity in the sense of helping those in need. B. Hammer: Social services sure aren't charity. No. However, most older Americans would rather have Social Security and Medicare than rely on charity. B. Hammer: What percentage of my forced coercion, goes to the bureaucrats? It depends on the program, but administrative costs of Social Security are less than 1%; Medicare costs are less than 2%.

You still didn’t answer my question.
Look at the state that is number 50 . Incoming one way truck and or trailer rentals. Of course you can find egregious examples of corruption in any charity. But charity is a helping hand, not a multiple generation income stream. A way of life. Of course people would rather have their social security, it is money they paid into the panzi scheme! Social security is not a welfare program, at least for citizens that paid into the system.

B. Hammer: Look at the state that is number 50 . Incoming one way truck and or trailer rentals.
You asked us to read an article which said that millionaires were fleeing California. We looked at the actual study that the article was based on, and it didn't support the claim, much less your own claim about helping other people. Perhaps you mean to say that California's population growth is slowing. That's largely because there is intense competition for jobs and space. For instance, the median home price in the San Francisco area is $1 million. B. Hammer: Of course you can find egregious examples of corruption in any charity. Not sure asking for a private jet is actually corruption per se. It's not as if he diverted the money somehow. He asked for it to continue his mission of traveling around the world spreading the word. This is an extreme example, of course, but does count as "charitable" giving. Some churches do a better job, but even in a meager church, much of the "charity" goes to the church infrastructure, and the salaried preacher. B. Hammer: Of course people would rather have their social security, it is money they paid into the panzi scheme! No, it's not a Ponzi scheme. It's an intergenerational transfer, the young paying the benefits of the old.

New Jersey may be in trouble if he "moves" to Florida, but Florida will also be in trouble as well since he will take his Communist politics with him. And since this filthy POS is already registered to vote in Florida, that state is already suffering the consequences.
May he soon burn in hell where he belongs. QUOTE: WINNING AGAIN: Obama Saw WORST PAY GAINS Since Great Depression – Trump Sees GREATEST PAY GAINS Since Great Depression Fake news, or just plain stupid? They even quote this: "The Employment Cost Index, a measure of salary and benefit costs, registered a 2.6 percent gain for the full year, tied for the best since 2007". The Great Depression was in the 1930s. QUOTE: It’s On: US, China Tariffs Take Effect In New Trade Even if the U.S. were to "win" the trade war, the long-term effect will likely be to weaken the U.S. position with regards to trade. China and other countries will look to develop markets outside the U.S. sphere so as not to be beholden to the U.S., which will no longer be seen as a reliable trading partner. The Trans-Pacific Partnership is a case in point. By pulling out of the agreement, the U.S. left an opening for China to develop those markets. Meanwhile, China's consumer market is exploding. That's downright Krugmanesque.
Brilliant, kiddiez. Abstruse Module 2018 now activated. Watch out for those Norvo-Trunions and Girdlesprings.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLDgQg6bq7o A favorite to engineers everywhere. China has stolen our trade secrets, our state secrets and our wealth. There was never free trade or fair trade with China. The U.S. would be better off if China never bought or sold anything with us. Trump is trying to level the playing field but is likely not going to accomplish much with China. I hope he sticks to his guns and simply ends trade with China. They have no intention of creating a fair trade agreement. Let them exploit someone else. If our companies were wise they would begin today moving their people, assets and investments out of China. If China continues to refuse to negotiate I see nationalization of American assets in the future and risks to Americans in China. China has never been a stable, honest or reasonable country and if they drop the veil they will likely revert to their oppressive/socialist self. Get out of China; Make America Great Again.
GoneWithTheWind: China has stolen our trade secrets, our state secrets and our wealth. There was never free trade or fair trade with China.
There is little doubt that China doesn't always play fair. GoneWithTheWind: The U.S. would be better off if China never bought or sold anything with us. That is certainly not the case. China has been crucial for low priced manufactured goods, which have greatly benefited the U.S. The U.S. imports $500 billion worth of goods from China, and exports to China $200 billion. GoneWithTheWind: I hope he sticks to his guns and simply ends trade with China. Manufacturing is now a global process with supply-chains often spanning dozens of countries. Simply ending trade would be economically disastrous. Z: "That is certainly not the case. China has been crucial for low priced manufactured goods, which have greatly benefited the U.S. The U.S. imports $500 billion worth of goods from China, and exports to China $200 billion."
---------------------------------------------------------- The millions of Americans in proverty who lived or live in shut-down factory towns and cities across the United States would not agree with you. Your reasoning is totally fallacious. China and Korea and Japan would tell you you are fools if you don't make sure your country is self-sufficient and a net exporting nation. That's just common sense. You want to be a creditor nation, not a beggar nation. Leftist policies have turned the U.S. into a weak beggar nation, consuming much more than it produces, and the quality of life is continually going down as we go further and further into debt to others. Eventually you collapse once all the economic life has been sucked out of your country. That's the process that has been happening since the early Seventies and is now about 85-90% complete. We are on the brink of going under, unless someone like Trump turns things around. Cheap shoddy goods = drugs. Your reasoning is that since China and Mexico are producing the drugs that are killing many Americans, since we crave those drugs it is good for America that they come in. Jim: The millions of Americans in proverty who lived or live in shut-down factory towns and cities across the United States would not agree with you.
There's little doubt that globalization can and have disrupted regional economies, even as it creates more overall wealth. Jim: China and Korea and Japan would tell you you are fools if you don't make sure your country is self-sufficient and a net exporting nation. Trade deficits can occur when a country is attractive for investment. The U.S. is still the safest harbor for investment dollars. You seem to think that if Germany builds a car factory in the U.S., creating high-paying jobs, that this indicates a weakness in the U.S. economy. It's a market balancing mechanism, and is especially beneficial to the U.S. because debt is most often denominated in dollars. In any case, if you want to increase exports, you have to make something other people want to buy at a competitive price. As a society industrializes, and standards of living rise, basic manufacturing is not longer competitive. Anyone can make a car nowadays. But designing a better smartphone, or a better social media platform, well, that takes a highly educated and creative workforce. That doesn't mean the economic dislocation that can occur should be ignored. But promising people that coal is the fuel of the future is just irresponsible. Jim: Cheap shoddy goods = Savings for consumers. QUOTE: Doc: "No wonder this circuit failed; it says 'Made in Japan'." Marty: "What do you mean, Doc? All the best stuff is made in Japan." — Doc and Marty in 1955, while fixing the time circuits

A record number of folks age 85 and older are working. Here's what they're doing.
Due to poor financial decisions mostly related to divorces, my uncle found himself broke at age 65. He went to work as a consultant in the field where he had been a corporate vice president. He worked until he was 87, when his body could no longer take the rigors of air travel. A year later, he died. Working as long as he could was a better outcome than sipping martinis by the pool. I retired three times. Once from the military at age 44, once from a salaried job at age 60, and finally from a little home office consultantship at age 71. Been smelling the roses for 16 years, and believe me, it ain't bad.
Semi-retired here. Some people have to keep working, some like to keep working. I don't get the moral preening over it.
Moral preening aside I'm becoming expert at doing nothing, finding that it suits me fine.
" Imagine There’s No Border"
This is an invasion. It is an invasion in Europe and an invasion in the U.S. That might not be clear to everyone, yet. But it will be and probably by the time it is clear to everyone it will be too late to stop it or reverse it. You are losing your country and will soon be second class citizens out voted at the ballot box and taxed out of your home to give free stuff to immigrants legal and illegal. It may well come down to a civil war. Heading to Wellfleet this week, can't wait to get there, to see if Bookstore or Mac's has the best oysters this year
The oyster farm looks exactly the same as those on the left coast over here in WA. Olympic type oysters, whatever their real name is.
If people think refugee resettlement in Britain is unpopular now, wait until they spread it to every corner.
Refugee resettlement is hard. I have participated in it, not in a major way, but frequently over forty years. Other immigrants have a desire to be here, bring job skills and a desire not to be sent home. Refugees are often pathetic, untrained folk who have fantasies about what America will do for them (good and bad). Most of any group are decent people who want to get along and be respected, so that is one thing people in the corners of the UK will learn when the refugees come in. Some are trained and hardworking families who just had their country go crazy. Yet a higher percentage of them than in our population will be criminals, helpless, or difficult to deal with. Families in the sending countries sometimes try to move difficult uncles along, and sociopaths* are more likely to lie to get themselves to the front of refugee lines. So that will be the second thing they learn in the corners of the UK. *Or mere hustlers. America has actually done a pretty good job of absorbing those over the centuries. |
