Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

"You need a law to "give freedom"?" You do if you take federal money for your church.
You ask:
"Is there a law against assisting crime?" If we were still under Rule of Law, Soros, the Koch brothers, and the rest of the Davos and Bilderberg swill would already have been charged under RICO, convicted, and be spending the rest of their lives in prison. In solitary. THAT is how foul this country's "Law Enforcement" and its "Legal" system have become. As a layman, looks to me like these people are accessories. There are laws against that, and IIRC there have been convictions. But, you gotta' have a prosecutor willing to go after leftists, of which are there ain't many these days (prosecutors going after leftists that is).
EMP scare stories need to be more widely ignored. Given the poor state of scientific knowledge everywhere, all the stories do is raise the noise level.
QUOTE: "It’s almost as though the wealthy residents of progressively governed states don’t actually enjoy paying for all the government they say they want." Not particularly. Generally, what happens is that areas of high economic activity attract the young and ambitious, while retirees leave for areas with a lower cost of living. As the population ages, that means overall net internal emigration. Two-thirds of New Jersey workers are college educated, with one in seven holding an advanced degree. About 30% of emigrants are leaving to retire.
So what are the other 70% leaving for, kiddiez?
"while retirees leave for areas with lower cost of living"
You realize that's not argument; it's restating the thesis. The higher cost of living they are escaping comes as a direct result of the progressive policies that they vote for during their careers. another guy named Dan: The higher cost of living they are escaping comes as a direct result of the progressive policies that they vote for during their careers.
A significant part of the higher cost is due to the high demand by professionals for increasingly crowded urban centers that generate most of the country's GDP. Much of the net internal emigration is explained by an aging population. If the population were becoming younger, then there would be net internal immigration, all else equal. Old retired people can't afford to compete for space with ambitious professionals who are willing to pay the high costs in order to have access to the opportunities cities provide. And yet you say it again.
Ask yourself why the price signals in these expanding areas are not triggering an increase in supply. The answer in many cases seems to be that the local, progressive-dominated governments, are pursuing policies that restrict increasing that supply, in terms of "livable neighborhoods", "New Urbanism", or other catch phrases. Even things as simple as parking mandates can skew the places where new development can occur. Why is the cost of living greater in San Francisco than in Houston or Dallas? another guy named Dan: Why is the cost of living greater in San Francisco than in Houston or Dallas?
Certainly regulation is part of the picture; however, regulation often follows the concentration of populations, San Francisco having a much higher population density than either Houston or Dallas. Still, your comparisons are apt. The geography of San Francisco is not amenable to sprawl, while unrestricted sprawl in Houston has led to widespread flooding. Meanwhile, the GDP per capita for the San Francisco metropolitan area is 60% larger than that of Dallas-Fort Worth, and 75% larger than that of Houston.

Thanks again, kiddiez, for your misleading and meaningless comparison concerning GDP per capita of SF to DFW or Houston.
Bet y'all can't even spot it. Back to your sandbox, kiddiez.

They may be retired and done with working when they move, but they ain't done with voting. Pay attention all you red-staters.
One Big Idea I've been mulling over is that I think it's high time we switched color schemes. I think that Republicans should be identified by the blue color, as in True Blue, and that Democrats should be identified by red, for obvious reasons - as is, 'Better Dead Than...." It's a puzzle, I'm not sure I understand how these got assigned in the first place. Planet Z, care to weigh in? Aggie: One Big Idea I've been mulling over is that I think it's high time we switched color schemes.
Red has traditionally been the color of the political left and labor, so it can be confusing. Aggie: It's a puzzle, I'm not sure I understand how these got assigned in the first place. It's an accident of history, like the QWERTY keyboard. What a nice little bowl of pablum. The takeaway is that the Republicans as blue (Federal Union) and Democrats as red (Leftward Socialists) actually makes a lot more sense. But in the 1980's Democrats were running away hard from the 'Socialism' label; too uncomfortably accurate and at the time, the world's biggest socialist country was crumbling, thanks to Reagan. Accident, indeed. What claptrap.

Modern Times is pablum? Aggie: The takeaway is that the Republicans as blue (Federal Union) and Democrats as red (Leftward Socialists) actually makes a lot more sense. It would certainly be more culturally consistent. By the way, blue for the political right comes from the Tories, the true-blue monarchists of their day. Aggie: Accident, indeed. As the history shows, it was an accident of events. The U.S. color assignment solidified during the protracted Bush v. Gore dispute.

re The Democrats' favorite sport: Ruining people
Rush commented on the topic yesterday saying with regard to the dems trying to destroy Trump and his supporters: QUOTE: Why is it that they can lie and do whatever, leak whatever, destroy whoever with impunity? I think more and more people are beginning to ask these simple questions. And as part of that, they want to know what they can do. Because it is clear to a lot of people that showing up and voting, well, if these people don’t like the way you voted, they’re gonna just throw it out. They’re gonna do whatever they can to undermine it and sabotage it, ’cause they don’t like the result. . . . There’s a price to be paid for this. And if that means some people get ruined, small price to pay for the lesson to be taught, don’t ever try this again. https://www.rushlimbaugh.com/daily/2018/05/03/outraged-americans-lets-march-washington/ FBI: Should I trust what TIME tells me? This is one of the reasons I use the moniker "feeble mind". There are people out there that are so smart that it makes me feel positively retarded. ..."All the counselors hate the waiters
And the lake has alligators And the head coach wants no sissies So he reads to us from something called Ulysses." That was always the line that got Alan King the most laughs when he sang Camp Grenada. The horseracing link is utter nonsense. What it tells me more than anything is you know nothing about horseracing and maybe nothing about gambling in general.
