Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

feel sorry for the people of Texas bearing Harvey, those of us in Florida know what they go thru. But they have a Republican run state, they will be fine just like Florida 10 years+ ago and unlike New Orleans. It should be another media narrative that blows up. That means you won't hear about it after a week. There's an interesting article somewhere about Waffle Houses and Home Depots, they are faster getting up to speed than any FEMA stuff. Hunker down and stay safe Texas!
So far all the severe flooding and catastrophic devastation predicted by the computer models appears to be overhyped and just flat out wrong...
It was down to a Category 1 by this morning and is expected to get down to Tropical Storm level by this afternoon.
Here's my favorite headline of the day, on the Fox News site: "Watch: Harvey rips up metal roofs, winds almost knock over reporter" A strong gust of wind can take off a metal roof, and I love the "almost" part. That poor reporter! So Massachusetts is the number 1 state? I didn't even finish reading that stupid article after I saw that. More fake news. The whole NE is on greased skids, MA is just nit quite as bad off as the rest.
Yeah, ain't it odd that population is shifting from the high ranked states to the low ranked states? Guess we deplorables just don't know what's good for us. Pity
This happens repeatedly (I live in NH), and is always racist without acknowledging it. These lists are measures of whiteness but they would never say that. Similarly, liberals always think we should be imitating very white countries (Denmark, Switzerland) and think they would like to go there.
The categories include education and crime for openers as important measures. African Americans (and Hispanics and Natives to a lesser extent) don't do as well on those, so their states look like they aren't really trying to make a nice place. BS. Black and Hispanic students in TX outscore those in other states, but the racial mix disguises that. Liberals love white places, but they can't admit that about themselves, so they disguise it with rankings like this. I wasn't surprised to see MA (or CA or NY) as the top state, but it did surprise me to see NH ranked at #2. Despite having sane gun laws (as in almost non-existent now that we have constitutional carry), no income or sales* tax, a legislature so large that it more closely represents the population than any other, and a raft of other recent improvements, we still have serious work to do if US (fake) News hasn't dropped us near the bottom.
* Well, no sales tax except restaurants, hotels, and rental cars. Gotta soak the tourists I guess. Of course "Gone With The Wind" must be oppressed. The mistake the writers and producers made was showing the war from the point of view of the South. Of course they did in fact not justify slavery nor argue that the South was right in any way. No! Their crime was they showed us the people and made them real to us. They also showed a somewhat benevolent treatment of the slaves. Arguably this was accurate but so far from what the left wants you to believe. Everyone should watch the movie. If you watched it years ago watch it again. Especially because I suspect it will be banned soon.
I took my teen-age daughter to see the movie, and pointed out that the slaves returning to their hovels at the end of daylight were what supported those elegant mansions and estates, and the phrase "kin to kain't" meant their workday started was soon as they could see in the morning to when they couldn't at nightfall.
GoneWithTheWind: The mistake the writers and producers made was showing the war from the point of view of the South.
It's an idealization that minimizes the impact of slavery on all aspects of society. One interesting scene is the men returning from a KKK meeting, though they minimized the impact compared to the book. Here's from the scene when they are returning from a "political meeting": QUOTE: Her mind was so fixed upon Ashley that of the first half-whispered words of Rhett, she only heard: "Take my horse . . . tied outside . . . ride like hell." Archie mumbled some question and Scarlett heard Rhett reply: "The old Sullivan plantation. You'll find the robes pushed up the biggest chimney. Burn them." It's probably the best movie that depicts the KKK as the good guys since Birth of a Nation. For the purpose of discussion, I'll accept your point about slavery and the KKK in the movie. That isn't nearly as bad as the Democrats lying about their involvement with them:
QUOTE: For more than 200 years, our party has led the fight for civil rights... https://www.democrats.org/about/our-history mudbug: "For more than 200 years, our party has led the fight for civil rights..."
The roots of the Democratic Party are in the Democratic-Republican Party of Jefferson. Even though he was a slaveowner, Jefferson arguably made significant contributions to civil rights, including for his part in the American Revolution and as writer of the Declaration of Independence. Yes, Jefferson set the predicate for the end of slavery. He created the Democratic-Republican Party. The modern Democratic Party arose in the 1830s out of factions from the largely disbanded Democratic-Republican Party. It was formed by Jackson, who was also a slave owner, used the Indians when he wanted their help and then took their land. From its inception it was the pro slavery party. Democrats filibustered every civil rights laws Republicans wrote - including the Civil Rights Act of 1964. After blacks were given the vote (by Republicans), Democrats took it away after Reconstruction. Democrats started the KKK to terrorize blacks and Republicans. As you mentioned, the KKK was lionized in the movie, Birth of a Nation, which was previewed in the White House by a Democrat president. A Democratic president signed Women's Suffrage but it was a Republican bill and he had little choice but to sign it. Democrats interned Japanese American citizens, taking their land and possessions. Democrats instituted Jim Crow laws and fought for segregation.
Can you name ONE piece of civil rights legislation Democrats initiated before 1964? I'll wait patiently.

mudbug: Jefferson set the predicate for the end of slavery.
True (in large part). mudbug: He created the Democratic-Republican Party. True (in part — one person doesn't make a party). mudbug: The modern Democratic Party arose in the 1830s out of factions from the largely disbanded Democratic-Republican Party. True. mudbug: It was formed by Jackson, who was also a slave owner, used the Indians when he wanted their help and then took their land. True. Jackson was also part of a movement that largely eliminated property as a requirement for voting, extending the franchise to the "common man", called Jacksonian Democracy. mudbug: From its inception it was the pro slavery party. True, though the Jacksonian era was characterized by the attempt to avoid the politics of slavery. mudbug: Democrats filibustered every civil rights laws Republicans wrote - including the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Largely true. Some bills were stopped by other parliamentary procedures. mudbug: After blacks were given the vote (by Republicans), Democrats took it away after Reconstruction. True, in the South at least. mudbug: Democrats started the KKK to terrorize blacks and Republicans. Largely true. mudbug: As you mentioned, the KKK was lionized in the movie, Birth of a Nation, which was previewed in the White House by a Democrat president. True. All the "good" people in Birth of a Nation were Democrats. In Gone With the Wind, nearly every character from the South was a Democrat, except Rhett Butler, who seemed to get along a little too well with Republicans. mudbug: A Democratic president signed Women's Suffrage but it was a Republican bill and he had little choice but to sign it. Of course he had a choice, but there was significant political pressure. The time had come. mudbug: Democrats interned Japanese American citizens, taking their land and possessions. Much of the pressure for internment came from Republicans, indeed from most political figures (Republican Ralph Carr was a notable exception), but it was Democrat FDR that signed the executive order. mudbug: Democrats instituted Jim Crow laws and fought for segregation. True. mudbug: Can you name ONE piece of civil rights legislation Democrats initiated before 1964? Sure. The extension of suffrage to the "common man" during the early 19th century, broadening participation in government and elections.

To be clear, Wilson didn't sign the 19th Amendment, as the President is not a party to the Amendment process; however, he supported the effort in his 1918 State of the Union address, then after several failed attempts, he called a special session of Congress, leading to its passage.

Frankie, too.
FDR was urged by his adviser Morgenthau to bomb the train lines ferrying Jews to the concentration camps, to slow down the speed at which the Holocaust was being carried out. FDR refused, because he didn't want the public to think we were fighting a "War for Jews." FDR refused to allow the entry of the so-called "Ship of the Doomed" -- a ship carrying Jewish refugees from the Holocaust -- entry to the US.

Re transgender pronouns. I used to identify as Napoleon Bonaparte but people laughed and ridiculed me. Now I identify as Josephine Bonaparte. Are people now required to address me as you Majesty?
Fiji Water: A guy I know loves it; says it tastes better than any of the others. I've never tried it.
Social justice activisim is not "rife" with oppression, it IS oppression. The Voyager special was really terrific. Great (real) photography, great CGI, good writing; all combined to tell a really wonderful story.
