Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Hippies were 50 years ago. I havent seen any hippies since 1973. Why is the media so fixated on a fad that lasted maybe 5 years?

Not just the media uses the term. I know a fifty-something electrician who is quite competent at his trade. He doesn't like to work full time- at least no more than a month or two at a time. He likes his time off. Because he is good at his trade, he can always get hired WHEN he wants to work. I once made the crack that he was born 10 years too late, as he would have made a good hippie. His mother has called him a hippie for his lackadaisical work habits. BTW, he has short hair. My book club had a Ukrainian visit us when we discussed Gogol's Dead Souls. After the meeting, some of us met with him at a local bar. The Ukrainian guest discussed some of the history of Ukraine and Russsia. He mentioned he was a college student when Gorbachov introduced Glastnost. The rejoinder came back that the equivalent of Glastnost on US campuses was the rise of the hippies. I did not agree with that, but didn't want to get into a discussion. I had been a college student during the hippie era- the person who brought up hippies had not. The point is that it isn't just the media that brings up hippies. UMD student calls hippie-inspired fashion 'deeply offensive' From the link: QUOTE: Sibay argues that while the hippie movement had its roots in opposition to the Vietnam War, it soon became a “way of life” that “would not accept the rigid system of capitalism,” contending that selling clothing meant to imitate their culture “is contradictory to the values the hippie movement represented.” As if back in the day, hippie style clothing wasn't sold in stores that lived and died by the rules of market capitalism. I used to play soccer with a guy who once had a store that sold hippie style clothing, which he closed because shoplifters ate up his profits. I recall reading about a Rolling Stones visit to a San Francisco clothing store, where the Stones left the store with quite a lot of clothing. IIRC, there was some complaint from the store that the Stones thought they didn't have to pay for the clothing. The assumption that hippie style clothing didn't involve conventional customer-clothing store interactions is absurd. Very few hippies sewed their own clothing or abjured market capitalism in the acquisition of their clothing. A further point is that back in the day, there was a big conflict between the "politicals" who wanted to make a big deal about the Vietnam war, and the hippies, who just wanted to groove. Those who spent time back in the day in the Bay Area would know what I mean. The dearly departed Dr. Mercury- departed from Maggie's Farm- was an example of a nonpolitical hippie. I, having migrated to hyper-political Berserkeley, was an example of a "political," though my politics were geared towards environmentalism, not SDS heaven. Given the above examples, I would agree with bgarrett that a lot of media mentions of hippies would be better not being made, as they show how ignorant the media is. I came of age in the hippie era (born 1949).
The comment is correct, all these 'hippie' clothes had EVERYTHING to do with making money, from the 'trendy boutiques run by the chain stores to the 'authentic' incense filled specialty shops (who charged outrageous prices for the right 'in' items). The hippies (most of them anyhow) sure as hell didn't actually make this stuff ... most had neither the skill nor the willingness to run a sewing machine or even thread a needle. It struck me, even back then, that the people obsessed with hating technology (and for that matter refusing to learn anything mentally challenging at all) were pretty anxious to acquire lots of recorded music (recorded by engineers, produced in factories, distributed by extensive networks of trucks as well as recording companies and played on equipment manufactured by capitalists). The few that actually tried the 'back to Eden' thing soon found that growing your own food (especially when the other co-op members were as lazy as you) was damned hard work. Much harder than getting a job. Just because you're not a workaholic doesn't make you a lazy socialist idiot.
If I had enough money to not have to work more than a few months a year and still live comfortably, I'd jump at the opportunity. As is I had to reduce my work week for health reasons, which I guess in your book makes me a lazy socialist idiot as well? As is I had to reduce my work week for health reasons, which I guess in your book makes me a lazy socialist idiot as well?
Please do not misquote me. I never called my electrician friend a "lazy socialist idiot." Those are YOUR words. That is YOUR projection. I asked the guy why he only worked four days a week. He said, "because I can't figure out how to work only three days a week and keep my job."
Because history started with Boomers and we must be saturated with everything the Boomers remember fondly.
RE Wrecking Crew: Good to see these guys getting some credit.
It's amazing how much stuff some other hired guns have played on too. Like John Guerin. Played drums on everything in the 70s from Hawaii 5-0 to Zappa, Sinatra, Monk, Mitchell etc, and if he didn't play on it Jim Gordon probably did. 1st listened to Serge Gainsbourg's Melody Nelson recently and was impressed by the bass and guitar playing. Wondered which Frenchmen were playing like that in '71. Turns out they brought in English musicians Herbie Flowers (most famous of Take a Walk on the Wild Side bassline) and Big Jim Sullivan (played on 50 #1 singles). Also Alan Parker and maybe Vic Flick. Anyway, good to see some of these guys getting some attention even if it's posthumous. "Loonie Labels in La La Land"
All you need to know is that California State Sen. Bob Wieckowskia (D) is a lawyer. These mandates are the first step in creating very profitable class action law suits. In this way it is no different from the use of laws that create a special interest group like the Title IX or laws mandating "equal" treatment for the LBGQT. Even a law that appears to merely reaffirm the same rights that we all have can easily be manipulated to create a super right for the named group and a windfall for trail lawyers. Re: Wrecking Crew
Great movie about the untold story of the music we all listened to! You'll never think about those oldies in the same way again. It really is a "must see" movie! Un-American to slam CNN? No, it's almost uniquely American, the idea of free speech and you're allowed to rhetorically attack anybody you please. It's why newspapers were so abundant once upon a time - there was none of this "sacred duty of The Press to enlighten the masses with the Truth" nonsense. You published a newspaper specifically to get your viewpoint out there and sling mud at the opposition and everybody knew which side you were on. Now, they pretend to be fair and impartial and unbiased and somehow above it all - a giant con job by slick propagandists. You aren't some priesthood on a mission from God, you're in the business of selling advertising space. Get over yourself.
QUOTE: CNN’s Acosta Rules It’s Un-American to Slam CNN, News Media Where did Acosta say criticizing CNN was "Un-American". Trump should start by abolishing the Dept. of Energy, The Dept. of education, EPA and HUD.
Sure. Because why would the U.S. need people to safeguard their nuclear armaments or regulate air and water pollution?
The US has had nuclear weapons since 1945. The Department of Energy was supposed to solve the "Energy Crisis" in 1973 for which it was completely worthless. Why is the Dept. of Energy needed for safeguarding nuclear weapons?
mudbug: Why is the Dept. of Energy needed for safeguarding nuclear weapons?
If you were to abolish the entire Department of Energy it would mean abolishing the agency responsible for safeguarding the U.S. nuclear capability. If you mean to abolish the Department of Energy but keep its separate parts, that's called a reorganization. You could reorganize the Environmental Protection Agency, too, while keeping its functions. So, it's not clear what is being advocated. Hah, more straw man arguments b/c you have nothing to say that isn't fallacious.
Let's start with the so-called "Department of Education." There is absolutely nothing in the Constitution authorizing the federal government to regulate education.
Jim: There is absolutely nothing in the Constitution authorizing the federal government to regulate education.
Congress can't directly regulate education (such as fining parents of truant children), but does have the power to tax and spend for the general welfare and to regulate commerce, which gives Congress broad authority, including the power to promote education. Labels: Working to destroy the restaurant/food truck/fast food business. In CA. Soon to come to a state near us.
Hippie clothes...can be found at your nearest Good Will store. Trump is plowing and salting the fields of a bureaucratic oligarchy: Read Don Surber every day. QUOTE: Paul Ekman: Three mottos I live by: Leave no stone unturned A good example of this was my decision to answer those who criticized my evidence for universality of facial expressions of emotion by going to the Highlands of Papua New Guinea to study people who had had no previous contact with the outside world or the media. It was quite a schlep, took over a year, but I got the evidence that those who argued against me could not easily dismiss. As Ekman said, a good example. It isn't enough to insist you are right, but it's the commitment to marshaling evidence in support of your hypothesis that makes for scientific advances. Something going on here?
Last November in Montana we had a tough campaign for our sole congress person. The Demos ran a lesbian gal against Zinke. Zinke won and was immediately chosen Secy. of the Interior (both events I supported). However, we now have only a few weeks to put together another campaign once again for the now vacated seat that Zinke just won., i.e. another campaign for one congress person. What sets my teeth on edge is this: the very strong fem/nazis who have been imported into this state and have plans to run the entire state have not put forward another woman. This time they have put someone with no political experience to go to DC and become a congressman. He is this musician http://billingsgazette.com/news/government-and-politics/montana-democrats-pick-musician-rob-quist-to-run-for-u/article_ae4853b1-3b4b-565c-8769-6ddea049a7b8.html Then I'm guessing the Republican will have no problem winning again? I'd rather have Zinke in the cabinet position than in a Congressional seat.
Yes, I agree with you. However, why such a colossal looser? Is it just because he has good (positive)name recognition due to his musical genre?
I remember when we had no DOE or EPA. Nuclear weapons were being stolen all the time and we were all breathing polluted air and drinking polluted water. It's a wonder any of us survived without these government agencies.
I find it hilarious that the left and the media are focusing on 'fake' scandals, rather than talk about the big changes Trump is making behind the scenes in government. He has repealed many regulations, had a hiring freeze for almost 3 months while they analyzed what positions were really needed and which ones were useless or redundant, they moved quickly on rounding up illegals and continue to make deep changes to the swamp every day.
These are the things that actually stick and change the country. Fake scandals about Russia and the minutiae of who is in 'charge' at the White House is like high school gossip. I am laughing all the way to the voting booth in 2020. The Democrats don't really seem to know what's hit them or what is going on....Ha, ha! |
