Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

"Pelosi: Hillary’s Votes Don’t Matter, What’s Important Is She’s A Woman"
Oh good, we wouldn't want to judge by the content of her character. Look at what happened when people voted for Obama because of his skin color. Wake up, America. Abandon the Dream. "What does it take to convince libertarians and conservatives that climate change is a problem?"
Maybe first try to convince the best scientific thinker in the country? The one who is retired; so doesn't have to fear for his job? Freeman Dyson on the global warming hysteria "CO2 is so beneficial...it would be crazy to try to reduce it". "Probably it does us Good, the Earth will get greener as a result". "The general public has a lot more common sense (than the media or politicians)". "I'm retired, I don't have to fear losing my job". "Man-made climate change is, on the whole, Good". "They (Climate Models) are no good for prediction". What does it take to convince libertarians and conservatives that ...
Maybe if those pushing NEW TAXES would act as if there were a catastrophe impending .. YOu know. Stop jetting around the world.. start jet-pooling for those traveling to the same place.. Might be a start. All the animals are equal and those who are supposed to sacrifice are exempt from doing without. And with all the scandals surrounding EVERY government agency .. the incompetence, the corruption, fraud, there might be a little more trust and faith in our "rulers" and that they are telling us the truth. If there WERE an asteroid on a collision course with earth, I am pretty confident that those in the know, would NOT let us in on the info. >>>What civilized society destroys it's own food.. The same "civilized society" that gives death threats to those who oppose baby murder and conflicting opinions. The same civilized society that allows millions of illegals get benefits without paying into the system, at the expense of the productive. THe same people who label CO2 (plant food), and manure (fertilizer) pollutants. The same "civilized society" that sits idly by why manufacturing/comforts of the first world, the best medical care , the most productive food source are destroyed in the name of "fairness". Damn, my blood pressure is up now. Wood burning power plants:
"In order to “reduce emissions” at Drax, more than 70,000 tons of wood will be harvested every day from forests in the US and shipped 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean to Britain." You can't make this s%^t up. Is the cost/"greenhouse gas emissions" of the ships that deliver the wood chips included in the emissions? And it's also disingenuous. Fast growing biofuels are specifically planted to fill this need. There are more forests in the US today, than there were 100 yrs ago. This makes it sound like loggers are going around razing entire mountains. And people who never leave their urban enclaves believe it. THe irony is rich; biofuels will save the planet by reducing "greenhouse gas emissions" but the result is that millions of acres of rainforest in SA have been razed and converted to biofuels because = economics. Millions of acres in the US are planted in corn for ethanol which resulted in algae blooms and fertilizer run off. Oh wait. THat requires gvt agencies to "clean it up" for 5 or more decades to get it to "acceptable levels." re Wood burning power plants:
"In order to “reduce emissions” at Drax, more than 70,000 tons of wood will be harvested every day from forests in the US and shipped 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean to Britain." What? We can't cut forests for lumber because it will reduce wildlife habitat, increase erosion ad nauseum and they don't want us to burn it in our homes because of emissions, but it is okay to harvest trees on an industrial scale for electricity production? This is insane. My feeble mind boggles. Same as ethanol. Input costs are more for less energy output but their intention is good. Or is it cloward piven?
no one can be this stupid. Should the Allies have bombed Auschwitz? A still-incendiary question
QUOTE: The tracks, had they been bombed, would likely have been fixed within 48 hours, he said. The bombers of that period could not zero in on the four gas chambers of Birkenau; to the best of his knowledge, there is not a single instance of successful pinpoint bombing in the entirety of the war. Instead, they would have had to carpet bomb. And in order to penetrate the gas chamber buildings, they would have had to deliver 500-pound bombs. however, a better source, The United States Strategic Bombing Survey for the ETO, disagrees. QUOTE: Although prior to September 1944, there had been sporadic attacks on the German transportation system, no serious deterioration in its ability to handle traffic was identified by the Survey. The vastly heavier attacks in September and October 1944 on marshalling yards, bridges, lines, and on train movements, produced a serious disruption in traffic over all of western Germany. Freight car loadings, which were approximately 900,000 cars for the Reich as a whole in the week ending August 19 fell to 700,000 cars in the last week of October. There was some recovery in early November, but thereafter they declined erratically to 550,000 cars in the week ending December 23 and to 214,000 cars during the week ending March 3. Thereafter the disorganization was so great that no useful statistics were kept. "The German economy is heading for inevitable collapse within 4-8 weeks." Report of Speer to Hitler, March 16, 1945. ... The German experience showed that, whatever the target system, no indispensable industry was permanently put out of commission by a single attack Persistent re-attack was necessary. even though the research disagree, the question is still answered. these aren't precision attacks, these were area bombings. moreover, the RAF's nighttime raids were already area bombing German cities for lack of better options and the USAAF's daytime attacks were not much different, although the bombers did have nominal military or industrial targets. This already verged into war crime territory (e.g., Dresden). the way to save the greatest number of Nazi victims, Allied servicemen and women and the Germans themselves was to bring the Nazis to their knees as quickly as possible. Raids that had no military value, and depending on when it was made, might have cost 15% of the attacking aircraft, would have only delayed the final surrender. Nazi authorities determined to murder Jews and faced with the lack of necessary transportation would have killed them anyway, anywhere they happened to be. This should be obvious. I concur. Bombing the camps would have made no sense.
It would have made excellent propaganda for the NAZIs although excellent propaganda wasn't going to help them much. And today we would still be hearing how the Allies bombed and killed Jews. Eisenhower was no fool. He knew ending the war fast would save the most. @ JK Brown, thanks for the link.
I am persuaded there has been a slight change in climate since the end of the Little Ice Age. I think it likely, though not at all certain, that human actions are some fraction of the reason, but well less than 50%. Additionally, IF human action is implicated the process, the future actions of China and India dwarf any adjustments Americans might make. I am not at all convinced that any looming catastrophe is upon us as a result. "There are 1.3 billion people in China, and they all want a Buick." We know the climate has changed since the Little Ice Age because we cannot see glaciers in Central Park and speak of glacial moraines where no ice is present.
Humans being upon the earth and within the Earth climate system cannot help but have an impact on climate. Along with every other living and inanimate object within the climate system. The questions are how much are the impacts and whether the impacts are beneficial or not as judged by where we believe the climate should be. We also have not had an open discussion what is presumed to be the optimal climate. Do we consider the plant kingdom when determining optimal CO2 concentrations? We do know that it will take 150 to 500+ years to reach the alleged catastrophic 4 degree C temperature increase depending on whether we apply a linear or fitted-curve to the historical data. The "emergency" only exists in the unsubstantiated, all-positive, feedback that the models generate. And, of course, no one has yet shown definitively that 4 degrees is the bad spot, nor do the models take into account what the plants will do with warmer temperatures and increased CO2, or the oceans' feedbacks. And anyone who has contemplated the power of nature (or God), knows we are mere inconsequential in the size and timeframe of Earth. It is humbling and not good for the self esteem culture. My take on the effect of a new $15/hr hamburger flipping wage:
1. the cost of fast food will increase (the cost of hamburger is up already) 2. sales at fast food businesses will decline 3. development of automated burger and chicken cookers will increase as will sales 4. employment of fast food cookers will decline 5. employment of higher skilled higher wage cooking machine techs will increase (but these jobs will likely come from service companies - not the fast food company) 6. the news media will interview fast food workers who are enjoying their windfall 7. the news media will ignore those who were laid off 8. some of the fast food cookers will become professional fast food cookers living on their living wage - but never advancing My take on the effect of a new $15/hr hamburger flipping wage:
One of my mechanics, fresh out of high school with no work or diesel mechanic exp. is paid less than $15/hr. He has to be schooled, monitored and his work checked before it rolls out the door so that we're not responsible for killing someone. He can't be left to work independently in the shop so that the other mechanics can work on site or on the road (which we charge more for) because he basically knows nothing. We are teaching him everything. The only thing we can trust him to do unsupervised is take out the garbage and sweep the floor. If he decides that he needs to be paid more- say $20/hr because burger flippers make more than him, he's going to have to be told to find another job. because we can't raise our labor rates anymore or we'll have no business. Since my electric, insurance, worker's comp, taxes, etc keep increasing yearly. You can't pay an employee more than they are worth to you. Obviously neither you nor your customers knows the true value of his labor! I guess we're supposed to give more and expect less.
You can't pay an employee more than they are worth to you.
It should be mandated that every Sec. of Labor and every Speaker should have that tattooed on their forehead before they take office. This kind of stuff along with costs of regulation and bureacracy have substantially diminished American businesses to the point where we are becoming a third world country.
My latest experience was this morning. Took a jacket in to the dry cleaner. They used to advertise, before the country was Obamunated, "same day service, in by 9, out by 5." I asked today how long it would take. She said if I left it there today (Friday), I could pick it up next Wednesday. I said thank you, and left with my jacket. Needless to say, there were no customers and not much going on there. Somehow everyone has been brainwashed into thinking that this level of national malaise is a good thing and we're better off. Sadly, memories are short of how this country used to be. re Bloomberg: “Environmental Groups Should Start Threatening” Congress, Gun Makers, Coal Industry & THEIR FAMILIES!
So now the Left wants to ignore the courts and increase the use of terror as a tactic to get their way. I wonder if Bloomberg realizes that terror can be a two way street, or perhaps he thinks he is quite safe with his hired guns protecting him? Well, lawlessness is the order of the day on the Left. I can only conclude The Left is desperate as they are losing on the issues of global warming and guns. Therefore desperate measures are called for. If they can't win the day legally, they will try to win illegally. Ends justify the means and all that. And they might get away with it. While the voters have signaled loud and clear that they want them stopped, people in positions of power are doing next to nothing to satisfy the voters' wishes. "If they can't win the day legally, they will try to win illegally. Ends justify the means and all that."
Unfortunately, they have a guy at the very top in the Oval Office modeling this behavior for them every day. This libertarian already knows climate change can be a problem, that's why I live in a dry house with heating and air conditioning.
"You can't pay an employee more than they are worth to you."
I believe that this is one of the most basic tenets of capitalism--if you pay someone more than they are worth to you, then they are living off of your dole, out of your pocket. You can't stay in business like that. The most important thing in business is to keep the doors open. You can't do that by pissing money away. This is how government works and we know how that is. If I understand Groth's argument, Auschwitz should have been bombed, resulting in killing many/most of the prisoners. I don't see that as "good".
The generals and their advisors have to make the best decision on what to bomb. It is unlikely that bombing Auschwitz would have saved lives, ended the war any faster or prevented the German army from fighting. The bombs should have been focused on the manufacturing centers, factories and skilled workers. The goal was to win/end the war not to make friends and influence people. It is estimated that two very small nuclear weapons that were dropped on Japan and ended that part of the war saved 2 million allied soldiers lives and 20 million Japanese military and civilian lives.
it is very misleading to claim that the Bombs ended the war and saved millions of lives. What ended the war was the relentless firebombing campaign against Japanese cities, of which the atomic bombs were a part of, but not the most destructive of the raids.
Postwar interviews with Japanese military and government officials shows the war would have ended by November, 1945, had the air war continued without the nuclear bombings. See the US Strategic Bombing Survey for the Pacific War for further details. The war war going to end before the scheduled invasions. the A bombs probably shortened the war by 6 or 7 weeks, sparing a half dozen Japanese cities the firebombing treatment, saving tens of thousands of Japanese civilians, and maybe 200,000 Chinese, since the war in China had been averaging about 200,000 Chinese dead each month. Adm. Daniel Gallery wrote in one of his books that we didn't have to use The Bomb--we could have blockaded and starved them into submission. It is left as an exercise for the reader to defend or attack the logic of starving women and children, and noncombatant men, estimating how many would die, how we'd feel about it now, and how the Left would be screaming about how horrible we were to do that.
What is missing from most history books is that Russia was poised to invade Japan from the West. Just as Russia wanted to take land in Europe they also wanted to take part of Japan. Russia was about three weeks away from invading Japan when Japan surrended. The U.S. Knew this and was moving their own invasion up to try to beat Russia. We would have lost up to 2 million allied forces invading Japan. Two of my uncles and a cousin were already in ships off the coast of Japan to begin the invasion when the Japanese surrended.
The Japanese have stated that it was the bomb that ended the war. They were fully prepared to fight an invasion to the last man and they themselves expected the 20,000,000 Japanese casualties. The bomb shook them to their core. It was believed that we had more and we would continue to make their cities disappear. THEY choose to give up rather then be destroyed in place without the honor of the good fight and dying for their country. It would be foolish to even try to make the claim that it was not the bomb that ended the war.
