Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Isreali Company cures cancer:
I see what you're trying to say there.. however, cancer fatalities are first world-ers. Because nature finds a way to control population. (and those light cars with great gas milage aren't doing enough to cull the herd) And the I AM LEGEND zombie/vampires were created by the cancer vaccine. Matheson might have been trying to warn us about something there. For every action there is a reaction. Re: hard to be a man.
I didn't understand the point of the article, but certainly support any effort to emphasize the importance of a male role model in society. A real eye-opener was the study of juvenile elephants in African reserves that had separated them from the bulls, thus allowing "male teens-gone-wild" in the wild. Once a bull was introduced into the herd, the juveniles learned how to behave and become part of a society contributing to the welfare of the species. Our Great Society welfare programs have undermined the value of a stable male role-model in the rearing of both sexes…to our detriment. Teens gone wild suggests we don't have sufficient adults tampering down within the families and communities where such moral codes should exist. Re: hard to be a man.
QUOTE: This is an ABSOLUTE MUST-READ book. The reason is simple - it provides men of all ages an explanation of what it means to be a man. if you're a male over the age of 18 and you need a book to explain what it means to be a man, then there's no way you're ever going to be a man. RE: Survey Says: Middle Class Women Want to Get Laid!
in the words of noted sociologist Cyndi Lauper: "And girls they wanna succumb Oh girls just want to succumb." So an apple a day won't keep you from the doctor and fish oil one of the biggest money makers in the whole supplement scam won't do diddly squat for your health. I'm shocked, shocked I tell you! The whole foods, organic, herbalist, supplements and CAM (complementary alternative medicine) is very seductive especially for anyone with actual health issues. Wouldn't it be great if you just eat yourself to good health or take a pill everyday and live to age 90? Wouldn't it huh, wouldn't it? I predict this will do nothing to dissuade someone from spending good money for these discredited products. You cannot logically argue someone out of a position they did not arrive at logically
How did the Japanese people get the long life expectancy ?
Was it by eating bacon? Beef? It has long been known that the Japanese people living on the island of Okinawa have the longest lifespan in the world. One of the reasons for this is diet, specifically eating lots of fish. What is so great about fish? Not only are they a great source of lean protein, they contain omega-3 fatty acids. Above paragraph was cut from the internet. This is sooo basic it can't be a April fools joke I believe that in fact the japanese life expectancy is roughly one to two years longer than the life expectancy of Americans of european descent. There could be many reasons for this. They tend to keep their older family members in the family home and take very good care of them. They are (the Japanese) all the same ethnicity. They culturally believe in staying physically active. There are a lot of reasons other than diet.
One of the significant mistakes that statistics brings to this discussion is to lump all "Americans" together. African Americans tend to have shorter life expectancies due to genetic predisposition to illness, obesity and due to risky life choices. Hispanic Americans too have a genetic predisposition to diabetes, obesity and to a lesser extent risky life choices. There are more examples of these islands of diversity in America that get lumped in together when a statistic is needed to prove or disprove something. Part of the problem with proving or disproving the value or lack of value to eating specific foods like fish or popping supplements is that there is a very large number of people with their own biases making a lot of money and using the 1st amendment to sell their biases. The simple truth is no matter which food or diet you choose to "prove" is better there is another agendized group who will insist that the exact opposite is true. So no matter what diet or lifestyle you pick to prove via the internet is the right one you will indeed find something that will support your beliefs. And of course you will need to ignore all the data on the internet that disproves your biases. I like fish, fresh caught salmon or trout, halibut is one of my favorites. That is the reason to eat fish not because of some crazy activist who claims it will make you live longer. Why fish oil is called "brain food" .
http://umm.edu/health/medical/altmed/supplement/docosahexaenoic-acid-dha Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid. It is found in cold water fatty fish, such as salmon. It is also found in fish oil supplements, along with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Vegetarian sources of DHA come from seaweed. Omega-3 fatty acids are good for your heart, and your body needs DHA for a healthy brain. Infants need DHA, especially during the first 6 months of their lives, so their brains, eyes, and nervous systems can develop as they should. DHA is found in breast milk and is added to some infant formula. Our bodies naturally make small amounts of DHA, but we must get the amounts we need from food or supplements. Most people in the Western world do not get enough omega-3 fatty acids in their diet. Source: Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) | University of Maryland Medical Center http://umm.edu/health/medical/altmed/supplement/docosahexaenoic-acid-dha#ixzz3W8RRstTj University of Maryland Medical Center Follow us: @UMMC on Twitter | MedCenter on Facebook http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fish_oil Fish oil is oil derived from the tissues of oily fish. Fish oils contain the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), precursors of certain eicosanoids that are known to reduce inflammation in the body,[1][2] and have other health benefits http://www.tofugu.com/2010/10/06/why-do-japanese-people-live-so-long/ (it is a combination of things) I have to say that it even makes sense. It seems logical when you can show that some component in our food is beneficial and essential that if we eat more of it that we will benefit from it. SO TEST IT! And they have tested it and found nothing. No one really knows why the testing of these theories don't support the theories. If omega-3 fatty acids were an essential daily requirement why do so many people live long and healthy lives and never eat fish or other food sources for this theoretically essential nutrient? What you are really talking about then is that this very appealing theory that is supported by quacks and well meaning "real" doctors sounds really good but cannot be proven. So the hell with it lets make believe it's true anyway because, gee it sounds so good. And right there is the basis for almost all of the quackery and health fraud in the supplement/herbalist industry. I.e. and appealing theory and a willingness to to accept the theory because it is so appealing to or basic human nature. After all wouldn't it be great to live to 100? Wouldn't it be great to be as physically fit as a teenager in our golden years? Wouldn't it, huh!?
