Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Copernican Theory - well, so many get in a twist over people who believe in Creationism, we might as well make fun of their ignorance of the solar system. Being a creationist is unimportant unless you are a genetic scientist.
My view is the 25% who didn't know couldn't conceive that the world did not revolve around them. But it does illustrate the lack of curiosity at the wonderment of the world these days. The movement of the sun through the seasonal sky being of no interest. The parade of stars unnoticed. It is not unrelated to "The Problem with Little White Girls". No awareness of the world out side their vanity. A world organized to let them feel 'useful' in order to profit from their desire for adventure. Car-dependency - what a frankly ridiculous article that presumes that the infrastructure of a country growing from essentially a small populated coast and spreading out into a vast undeveloped area would/should evolve in the same manner as the infrastructure of Europe, which in essence you have 50 historically established centers and no open areas.
Well said.
FWIW, I'd tear each of these idiotic "points" into their respective bits of trash, but it's the "atlantic", otherwise known as "we think we saw this in euuurope once so it must be cooler than those other stupid 'mericans". The idiot author never heard of the Autobahn? Ever sat thru a Saturday AM traffic jam on the A8? Ever try to drive/ride/walk/fly whatever south on holiday? What a maroon. And BD does buy into this a bit, seemingly... We don't have a car dependency, we have freedom of movement, the exercise of power.
QUOTE: Similarly the American who has been humbled by poverty, or by his insignificance in the business order, or by his racial status, or by any other circumstance that might demean him in his own eyes, gains a sense of authority when he slides behind the wheel of an automobile and it leaps forward at his bidding, ready to take him wherever he may personally please. ... In 1950 the civilian labor force of the United States was estimated to number a little less than 59 million men and women; in the same year the number of drivers in the United States was estimated to be a little larger: 59,300,000. ... Never before in human history, perhaps, had any such proportion of the nationals of any land known the lifting of the spirit that the free exercise of power can bring. "we have freedom of movement"
Which, like all other manners of "freedom" is always under assault from those who "know better" or "have our best interests"... Feh. Jimmy Fallon, Democrat Political Asset
See, see what they did there? They added the "et" so as obscure the truth. I always though an "asset" was a young female donkey...
Little White Girl: Took long enough, but she learned a good lesson.
I do hope Donna and Frank wise up as the LWG did, but given their ages, it will take much longer to break their programming. Europe: Roads have been there since before Roman days. America: Trackless waste (mostly) until the 1700s. E: Compact in comparison. A: Settled by those not happy with Europe. Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks; diff'rent loads for diff'rent toads. The Atlantic hates difference, favors "diversity"? I was in agreement with her narrative. My church sends groups to Guataemala. I've never gone, but I will support sending the guy who is an actual carpenter, knows what he's building.
The girls story? Shame on the people who were not Teaching during the day, instead of wasting every bodies time rebuilding it in the night. I have to remind myself to do that with my employees on non critical stuff. Not even a week in and Fallon has ensured that I will never watch him.
...and that's a good thing. Donna and Frank
Hate to say it but the interstate highway system is going to kill this country. And I say this even though I hope to make my escape from the Northern People's Republic in a few years. I will be forever tainted by my current zip code, as I should be. Yes, I'm a conservative, yes, I voted for the American in the last two elections, but I may have lived here too long. On a trip down to FL years ago, as I entered a restaurant I was taken aback by the sign on the door,"Please leave long guns in the vehicle, holstered handguns OK.". Intellectually I may support the 2D, but deep down on that and other things, am I damaged? John, I do not understand. What does it mean when you say the interstate highway system is going to kill this country?
And what about the the bill of rights damages you? Is all this a joke that I just don't get? |

With the warm weather I spent a good portion of yesterday shoveling the decks and removing ice and packed snow from the driveway. I managed to get most of the driveway down to bare pavement, leaving only a few...
