Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

If it weren't for the free-for-all that government programs represent, I'd have no problem with immigration reform. 90% of the people I've met who oppose reform, oppose it because "they will get free stuff and never put anything into the system". I won't disagree with this, and I typically suggest "perhaps we need to fix the free stuff, perhaps stop or reduce it substantially." This, of course, leads to gaping mouths at my supposedly cold heart.
Another 2% oppose it because they feel it will reduce wages, ignoring the fact that even as illegals, they have played a role in keeping wages down. Getting rid of them will not help increase wages. Fact is, they play a useful role here in the US and many, assuming they pass background checks, probably should be citizens so they can pay taxes for the work they do. I have hired illegals from time to time. They do excellent work, they arrive on time, they work hard, they are diligent. I once hired a local contractor to do my insulation. He ate the food in my pantry when I was not around (then lied about it), and I once arrived home to find him locked in my bathroom with 'issues'. This is not the only bad story I have regarding local contractors, nor is this common. It's just a point worth considering when talking about 'those lousy illegals'. Our available labor pool isn't really all that squeaky clean. I have never, ever had a problem with any illegal I had doing work around my house. I don't even feel ashamed at having hired them. If there was a teenager around who was skilled and willing to do what I was hoping to do, I'd hire them. The remainder of people opposing the illegals are, generally, opposed for racial reasons. They don't look like me. How do I know this? I've noticed my Irish-American friends have no problem being served by European or Russian workers who have traveled here during the summer. Sure, they have visas and are "legit", but what if we could offer these same visas to illegals who would like them? But we don't. I'm all for amnesty within some reasonable framework. Get them paying taxes. They already get tons of 'free stuff', even as illegals. Being citizens would allow them the opportunity to get more, but most would likely be happy to find jobs and work. Which would help the overall state of the market. I don't have an issue with it either - amnesty, shamesty - whatever, let's get them legal citizens and move on.
The problem is that we've created a while new protected class of citizen with this. They probably won't be making lots of money in the services industry which means they will qualify for "special" status when it comes to taxes and if it works like the current "tax credit" system, they will be getting more money back than they paid in. And we shouldn't even get into Obamacare - you know that it will be expanded to cover this new protected class making it more expensive and less than useless for those who truly need it. Ummmm..... what taxes would illegals suddenly start paying Bulldog?
I am under the impression that, as low skilled workers, they would pay no income tax due to not making enough money. At least that has been preached here at Maggie's for a long time, that 'the poor' are not paying their fair share. If they are working for cash, why would being legal be an incentive for them to change that arrangement? Vox Day has an article at his blog today titled "Vibrancy in South Africa". I think we will find diversity and multiculturalism are not what we had hoped and changed for either in SA or the US.
Blatz - if Marianne was still with us, she'd love it.
Blatz - a name from the past. "Next, he'll require us to wear rubbers when it rains "
But in Bloomberg's NYC, a woman with to many rubbers is likely to spend the night in the pokey. "the great rack..."
A statement with so much overhang until we get to the preposition "...of bike share bikes" if only it had been followed by a proposition. Jose Meade has some valid concerns he don't like Mexicans and most this side of border don't like Mexicans.
Problem is yall yankees are addicted to cheap labor and Brown's in Californicate and Ohio and Connecticut. Jose do everyone a favor and keep Mexicans in yall's own damn prisons. I am going to go out on a limb here and predict that Never Yet Melted will be among the first rounded up for intolerant conduct in violation of DOMEA ("Defense of Marriage Equality Act").
Re: the crime of loving God. (Obama is a petty and jealous god,)
Republicans failed to defund the Left; now Obama will defund the Right. If you thought there was a war on Christmas before, wait until to you see what will be done now that the Left cannot be restrained. Young Marines--Refuse to pay taxes, since "In God We Trust" is on our dollars and the DOJ is against that.
Bloomie's a prick. And I read that Weiner's ahead in the race to replace him. Little difference between two pricks. |
