We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
See - here's another example of the things you learn here at Maggie's.
1 - Turns out that honi soit qui maly pense means "Shamed be he who thinks evil of it" which is the motto of the Order of The Garter a dynastic order of the House of Windsor. I never knew that.
Other translations of the phrase are: "A scoundrel, who thinks badly by it", "Shame on him, who suspects illicit motivation" followed by "Those who laugh at this today, tomorrow will be proud to wear it" which makes the most sense.
Also "Spurned be the one who evil thinks" and "Evil on him who thinks evil"
2 - I wanted to see if I could find any reference to John Gilbert's Bed. As it happens, there is a reference to a silent movie star named John Gilbert who failed to make the transition to talkies because he had a rather high pitched voice. Apparently he was quite handsome and had female fainting in movie theaters all over the US. He was Greta Garbo's live in lover.
There was also an Australian Bush Ranger named John Gilbert who was shot to death at the tender age of 23. He was also the only Bush Ranger to never have been jailed.
There is also a Gilbert's Bed and Breakfast in Rehoboth, MA.
