We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Oh Irony!! Heh. I remember in about 1990, Chapel Hill, N.C., fully immersed in ironical alternative punkitude, walking along with a girlfriend of mine, and telling her "I hate irony". What I meant was that I hated what this lady is talking about, which was in full swing before she turned ten years old, though it looked different and wasn't as pervasive. My girlfriend had no idea what I was going on about.
Anyway. "How to live without irony". Well, if you're afflicted, you'll probably grow out of it, kind of like facial acne.
But if you must try, it's easy!!
For a start, manage your alienation from your fellow men and women that are different from you. Acknowledge them for what they are, their virtues and vices, and get over the nausea caused in you by the fact that they value different things.
They may, for instance, have a few Thomas Kincaide paintings -- because they non-ironically like them. That's okay!!
You may think those paintings are unbearable kitsch, but stop pretending that because a person likes them they aren't as smart, wise, or fully aware as you are. That their appreciation of being alive isn't as finely tuned as yours is, or that the quality of their life as they live it is somehow less than what you're capable of feeling - or at least apprehending is possible, even if you don't feel it.
You are one of millions who are born and die, and after that probably just a few will remember you - same as those folk who value Mr. Kincaide's works. That's life!!
Pro Tips: don't react to irony by becoming overly sincere. That doesn't work either.
Does anyone here need the dictionary definition of "to stop"?. That means ALL/EVERY nook and cranny, every highway and legal border crossing; every one crawling under the dirt and everyone walking through the river, or paddling up to the coast. TO STOP ALL--is what I want before I will feel comfortable with a negotiated "solution" to provide comfort to those who are already here illegally. Nations whose people wait in line should be given first go ahead. Nations (Mexico and southern hemisphere)whose people come here with no idea of what a "good" citizen should be--should be forced to reabsorb their own masses until such time as their revolution TRULY produces a desire to stop migrating. We can help to stop the starving, and ease the strain on our medical facilities. We can start building hospitals with real quality included in the design SOUTH OF THE BORDER. Until that time immigration needs to be understood by all Americans for what it is--to migrate (to physically move) toward a perceived to be safer and more comfortable place. Almost always that means a move toward some better condition. You want to feed tho people of the south climb in your car, pack in the groceries, and go! Or better still--take your retirement check down there and contribute it to their monthly economy through your living expenses. EITHER WAY I DO NOT WANT TO BE LIED TO ANYMORE ! A failed country in many ways is a FAILED CULTURE--once the academics of the world are able to put their mind and mouths around that one--we might get to an "agreement". WE MUST STOP FUELING THE CORRUPTION in MEXICO not only for those people, but most importantly for ourselves as well. How about we stop paying their wealthy corrupt leaders until such time as they begin to feed their poor--they have their own money and their own ability--the just don't have the desire. "It's too crowded don't you see?--Send em north"
