Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

A Happy Thanksgiving wish for Maggie's readers and contributors one and all.
And I hope everyone gets to eat too much. This has been my favorite holiday for as long as I can remember.
Happy Thanksgiving to you, the other Maggie's contributors, and all that wander into this place from time to time. Happy Thanksgiving to all and especially thank you for Maggie's Farm!
Agree on today being the best holiday.
Happy Thanksgiving to all! Thanksgiving Proclamation
[New York, 3 October 1789] By the President of the United States of America. a Proclamation. Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor—and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me “to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.” Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be—That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks—for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation—for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war—for the great degree of tranquillity, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed—for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted—for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us. and also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions—to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually—to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed—to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord—To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease of science among them and us—and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best. Given under my hand at the City of New-York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789. Go: Washington Thanks Be To God.
May He crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea. Here's my Thanksgiving Hymn: https://www.dropbox.com/s/q0ti5cdgzlhee9f/For%20the%20Beauty%20of%20the%20Earth.mp4?dl=0 I don't do YouTube so you won't see this video anywhere else.
Very nice way to commemorate the holiday.
And thank you to Bird Dog and all of the other contributors to Maggie's Farm. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you. The original poem was written by Matthias Claudius in 1782 and had 17 verses. A shortened version, beginning at the third verse, became popular and was published in German hymnbooks. The original English translation was by Jane Montgomery Campbell, and she taught the hymn to children at the Church of England parish school in London.
Thanksgiving is my Christmas, I give thanks to God for everything He has provided us. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
Very beautiful! Thank you, BD!
I wish all Maggies Farmers a wonderful Thanksgiving! Happy Thanks Giving to all you salt of the earth contributors, long time commenters and lurkers. You guys are all wicked smart and would make the most interesting dinner guests. I am thankful for you. May you all be Blessed.
Thank you BD, Bulldog, Roger, news Junkie, Barrister, Dr. Joy, and everyone else for keeping it real./
Thank you kindly, BD. I've enjoyed what you and your fellow traditionalist New England Yankee humans have had to share for a good many years now, I even got one of my old high school buddies from the Gulf Coast following you regularly. I hope your Thanksgiving celebration was richly blessed.
Many thanks to Bird Dog for keeping MF alive and well. The Sunday morning post is a blessing. I am grateful for your courage and for your determination.
Mr. Kessler--Thank you. Yes-- It is the best holiday of the year. Its very name implies transcendence as giving thanks presumes there is Someone receiving it. Thanks to Transafl for posting the 1789 proclamation.
I’m thankful for all the posters and commenters on this blog.
Even the news junkies recent statements which I generally haven’t cared for. As part of my morning routine I always come to Maggie's for the inspiration it provides.
Happy Thanksgiving to Bird dog, his family and all of the other visitors. That is a murderers row of vino. For those who haven't had a well aged port its a revalatory experience. Happy Thanksgiving to all the Maggies.
I second all the comments above, including mine!
Happy Thanksgiving, everybody! But griping is one of my favorite blessings!
Today I am grateful that I have things to be thankful for.
My brother-in-law passed away last week and happening this close to Thanksgiving it really hit home that when someone close passes, rather than grieving that they are gone, be grateful that you had them while you did. Maybe it's just with my age I have accepted the inevitability of our mortality, but even in loss there can be reason to find gratitude. Happy Thanksgiving to Bird Dog, the other contributors, and the commenters here at the Farm.
We have so, so, much to be thankful for. Thank God who provides all.
My 12 year old granddaughter today gave our Priest a pie before Mass. During his homily for Thanksgiving he mentioned that she wrote in her note he should share his gift. He mentioned that in our Thanksgiving, we should share. I wept hearing of Nia's wisdom. We give thanks for God's blessings. God gives so much that we are thankful for. He may ask, of our gifts, what did we share? QUOTE: One love (hear my plea) One heart (hear my plea) Let's join together and I'll feel alright Let's join together (give thanks and Praise to the Lord) And I'll feel alright (and I will feel alright) — Bob Marley I always just thought that was from Godspell.

Thanksgiving - the one real American holiday...
To be fair, I imagine the Fourth of July would like to have a word... Happy Thanksgiving one and all. Although this is one special day in the year to commemorate our blessings, in truth we should all wake up with gratitude every day, for being in a small group that has been gifted in Life's Lottery with grace. I know I do.
Thanks to Maggie's Farm and its numerous contributors, we are grateful for this space. And if possible, please pass my best to Bulldog. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you. Our Thanksgiving is second Monday in October when the crops are in but the weather is still reasonable. Our weather on Thursday was bloody cold and a lot of snow.
Back in the day, one kid taught Sunday School and had the preschool (three to five-year-olds) and one of the highlights of the year was Thanksgiving Sunday when they made pumpkin pies. Students spent September "earning" money to help pay for the ingredients (parents loved this). Come the day, students arrived armed with rolling pins and aprons. Balls of dough (made at our home) landed in front of each student and was enthusiastically flattened and placed in an aluminum pie plate. Then each student was handed a Ziploc baggie with pre-measured amounts of pumpkin puree and spices (we knew a recipe which worked), which they enthusiastically mooshed until all was well mixed. A corner was cut off and the ingredients poured into the shell. Almond slices on top identified each pie. At the end of the church service, the young'uns proudly presented their contribution to the Thanksgiving meal to their families. |
