Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

If you've suffered such a fate with some of your add-ons, there are a few steps you can take. The first is to go to the Tools menu, 'Add-ons', click on the disabled add-on and select the 'More' link. That'll take you to the add-on's home site. If there's an update, it'll be noted. One of the add-ons many of us use, 'Create Shortcut', has been updated. If the add-on hasn't been updated, you can always try doing a Google search for an alternative, although odds have it (since the new FF just came out) that it won't have been updated, either. As a last resort, you can try 'version-bumping' it yourself. Add-ons usually have the current Firefox version number in them, so raising that to the latest Firefox version will let the add-on work again. Occasionally, there might be an actual code change in Firefox that disabled it, in which case it would have to be rewritten by the author. Version-bumping also works with Thunderbird add-ons, assuming it's only the older version number in the code that's keeping it from working.

Gotta love these morons - not only did the latest "update" lock up my computer, I had to reboot twice to get it to work properly on two new downloads.
And Firefox still doesn't play nice with Kapersky. Why I don't know - Kapersky says it's FF's fault, FF says it's Kapersky's fault. In the mean time, three of the Kapersky functions don't work in FF, but do work in IE. I'm getting tired of the FF bullshit every three or four weeks. TF - Have you seen this? Might be the answer.
And thanks for this morning's in-depth fishing report. Lake World reports that striper are being caught 50-80 feet deep with down lined herring on the lower end of the lake, particularly over open water humps. Trolling 50-70 feet deep with a variety of lures, including Roadrunners, bucktails and Grandma lures, is also catching fish. Schooling activity is really starting to pick up on the lower end of the main lake. Consider it an update. :) Here's another update for you - I don't do live bait. :>)
Anyway, yeah - Roadrunners work nicely for crappie - I've also found that Ye Olde Strike King in the mini versions work very well. Bucktails over humps work. The problem with that on this lake is you end up paying more attention to the GPS than you do the rod - I missed a really nice fish yesterday trying to position the boat along the river bed up by the submerged town buildings on the north side. I'll have to take a picture of my sonar for you so you can see what I mean - when they talk "humps" in this lake, you go from 150 feet to 25 feet back down again so fast - the grades are 3-4% - some are straight up down cliffs with very little plateauing- if any at all. But that's a subject for a different thread. :>) The last 4 -5 years I have alternated between BitDefender and Kaspersky, depending on which one is free w rebate coupons at a local retailer. I recently bought Kaspersky Pure for a new year of security software. From what I have read here, I may well return it to the store.
Looking at Dr. M's link- thanks for the link- I don't know that I am comfortable with having the Firewall settings at low security to enable Kaspersky. I still can't absorb the notion of fresh-water Stripers. Do they taste like salt-water Stripers?
In my opinion, yes they do. The filets are nice, clean, firm flesh good for frying, poaching or baking. I'm not much for poaching or baking (The Mrs. loves those methods) preferring my fish fried using Zatarain Seasoned Mix but I have tried a mustard based season breading that - well it was spectacular. One of the fishermen here in the complex makes it up and I will admit it is really good. He is going to write it down for me this week so if I get it, I'll pass it along. :>)
Sunday's limit. http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/314950_284893411521959_100000039065736_1178091_1344120426_n.jpg Dr. M, an interesting problem has arisen in the last day. Yesterday I noticed that ads were popping up. As I have AdBlock on my Firefox browser, I didn't understand why it was occurring. I then noticed that AdBlock was missing from my toolbar, and also from the tools drop down menu. I reinstalled Adblock.
This morning, I noticed that ads were again popping up, and that AdBlock was missing from the toolbar and from the tools drop-down menu. I reinstalled AdBlock. G - You didn't mention if this started happening right after upgrading FF to v7. If so, I'd uninstall v7, put v6 back in and ask AdBlock WTF is going on. If you haven't updated to v7, then maybe it's one of those new 'smart' worms or viruses that disable blockers and will actually prevent new anti-virus software from being installed. I ran into one of those about a year ago on a friend's computer. Tried installing both Norton and ZoneAlarm and both installs futzed out partway through. Had to reinstall Windows.
Also, I can't quite figure out why you want/need AdBlock in the first place. Both FF and IE are pretty good these days when it comes to blocking pop-up boxes, and I'd worry about some program blocking EVERY pop-up box, because sometimes they're necessary. For example, when we add a pic to a Maggie's post, clicking on the 'Add Image' button opens up a pop-up box. Ditto Netflix when adding a movie to the queue. Let me know what you figure out on your end. Dr. M, thanks for the tip.
The disabling of AdBlock occurred after installing FF 7. I just uninstalled FF 7 and went back to FF 3.6.23. What is interesting about this disabling is that after I reinstalled AdBlock yesterday, AdBlock kept going. It was only when I turned on the computer this morning that AdBlock was disabled again. After reinstalling AdBlock this morning, still w FF 7, I tried turning off the computer, but AdBlock was still there. Maybe there is some cumulative effect going on. Another point about reinstalling AdBlock is that my old AdBlock preferences were still showing after reinstaling, which sounds as if AdBlock were disabled, not removed. Why do I want/need AdBlock in the first place? Because it blocks ads. The presence of annoying ads I hadn't seen before was the clue that AdBlock had somehow been disabled. AdBlock isn't perfect. For Popular Mechanics slide shows, you need to disable AdBlock. If you don't disable it, you see only every other slide. There was some Firefox problem site, but it wanted $38 if you were satisfied with the answer. If the problem doesn't "pop up" in several days, I will know that it was FF 7 that caused it. Please let me know, and I'd note that just this morning FF came out with (yet) another update, so it's possible they fixed the bug. The info might be on their web site, in case you want to check it out before bothering with an install and possible reinstall back to the older version. Did you say you reverted back to v3.x? Why not v6?
